The Social Media Campaign

IDA is the biggest alliance of organizations of persons with disabilities working together for an inclusive society that values diversity. The motto of the disability movement is "Nothing about us, without us!" and it indicates the reality that persons with disabilities must be involved in all decisions that affect their lives -- from local to global decisions.

  • People with disabilities are still the largest marginalized group - about 15% of the world's population.
  • People need to stop seeing disability as a medical or charity issue - people with disabilities are a part of the diversity of humanity.
  • Everyone deserves to be equal and respected.

This campaign aims to inform a wider audience that persons with disabilities are still one of the largest and most overlooked minorities around the globe. The way forward will include steps that take place locally, regionally and globally.

How to use this toolkit

This social media toolkit has a large number of posts. It is meant to be used like a menu – so that people or organizations can use the posts that reach their audience or fit with their work.

Within this toolkit you will find text that you can use in your newsletters, in whole or in part, or as part of a social media post. There are also pictures (if you do use any of the pictures, please ensure that the alt text is added). Please use whatever items work best for you and your organization.

There is not enough data from persons with disabilities in #SDG monitoring. We must collect disaggregated data to measure if the progress made on SDG indicators are inclusive for people with #disabilities #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21 @IISD_SDGs @UNDataForum #Data4SDGs @WorldBank

(Alt text: Illustration of a diverse group of persons with disabilities, a 15% and the world behind. SDGs logo.)

The #SDGs can't be truly achieved if they leave behind 15% of the population. IDA calls on governments and policy makers to actively include persons with #disabilities in their strategies to achieve the 2030 Agenda and ensure that #NoOneIsLeftBehind #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

Bridging the digital divide

Since #COVID19 started, surveys have abounded. But how many of them have been accessible to everyone? #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

  • iData is IDA's platform that allows for the creation, launch and analysis of data collected through the use of online accessible surveys. Curious to learn more? Visit https://bit.ly/2YV2VCJ #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

(Alt text: Drawing of a laptop showing the landing page of iData Survey Platform on the screen.)

Persons with #disabilities are more affected by the digital divide. Why? Lack of affordability or accessibility of training which to allow them to fully benefit from Internet access. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3nqHPoY @PLOSONE #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

(Alt text: Drawing of a person who cannot access a mainstream survey tool because it is not accessible.)

What is the digital divide? It's the gap between people who have access to modern information and communication technologies, and those that have restricted access or none at all. #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

  • According to @pewresearch a decade ago about 54% of households with a #disability use the internet, compared to 81% of households with no disability in the US https://pewrsr.ch/3CrO6Fn

(Alt text: Icon showing the digital gap with half of the world connected and the other half in the dark.)

Overcoming the digital divide is the same for everyone who doesn't have access to internet and tech #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

  • 1) make internet bandwidth affordable
  • 2) ensure that the devices meet the user's needs
  • 3) make usage of these technologies easy and have multiple learning options for their use
  • 4) technical support that is user friendly
  • 5) create digital spaces that are safe and make the user self-sufficient

(Alt text: Drawing of a person accessing iData Survey Platform on his laptop.)

#Covid19 has accelerated the uptake of digital technology for those who could access it, while leaving those without access further behind, including older persons with #disabilities. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3A4U128 @AGE_PlatformEU @H2020Shapes #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

(Alt text: Drawing of a laptop showing an Illustration of a diverse group of persons with disabilities and an icon representing the lack of internet connection.)

2030 Agenda and the #SDGs say technology and accessibility can promote inclusion. They can also shape the future of #sustainabledevelopment for all. Want to know more about how we get there? Visit https://bit.ly/3x1Qdyz #STIForum @UNECOSOC #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

Inclusion of persons with disabilities in disaster risk reduction and climate action

About 9.7 million persons with #disabilities are forcibly displaced as a result of conflict and persecution, and many are victims of #humanrights violations and conflict-related violence. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3oFbuKy @UNHumanRights @UNICEF #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

(Alt text: Wheelchair icon made of trees in the middle of a dry land.)

When crisis happen, people with #disabilities are often the last to be rescued as disaster preparation is also not inclusive and accessible for people with #disabilities. Visit https://bit.ly/3kGVXIX to better understand. #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21 @MyEDF @PDFSEC @SustDev

(Alt text: Picture of a woman carrying a child on the middle of a flood.)

Governments must ensure participation of persons with #disabilities and their representative orgs in designing, implementing and monitoring disaster risk reduction and #climateaction programs. Know more: https://bit.ly/30BKXWE @UNHumanRights #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21 @PDFSEC

(Alt text: Nelly Caleb, Co-chair of the Pacific Disability Forum, and representative to IDA, is participating in the expert meeting on climate change and human rights. As 15% of world, persons with #disabilities want and must play their part combating climate crisis. But due to many barriers, this is not possible in most areas. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Cw1w3O @UNFCCC @McGillCHRLP @GLAD_Net #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

(Alt text: Picture of a person reading the article available in the link on his laptop.)

The global action to address #climatechange is a unique opportunity to address exclusion and discrimination against persons with #disabilities. We call climate actors to work with OPDs so that we can make the best future opportunities together. #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

(Alt text: Illustration of a diverse group of persons with disabilities, the SDGs logo and the icon of the SDG 13: climate action.)

Rights of women with disabilities

Women + girls with #disabilities face systemic barriers to participation+inclusion and represent a disproportionate percentage of the world’s poor as a consequence of discrimination. Know more https://bit.ly/3kKia9o #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21 @FCDOGender @Sida @UN_Women

(Alt text: Illustration of a diverse group of persons with disabilities, the SDGs logo and the icon of the SDG 5: gender equality.)

“Women and girls with #disabilities were subjected to violence both within and outside the home, and by laws, policies and practices of the State which denied them legal capacity, the right to bodily integrity and autonomy…

…and permitted and sometimes targeted women and girls with disabilities for forced sterilization, forced abortion, forced contraception…

…and other forms of involuntary treatment, including institutionalization," said Jarrod Clyne, IDA's Human Rights Advisor speaking at the Human Rights Council. Learn more: https://bit.ly/2YUiZVc #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21 @UN_HRC @UN_Women

(Alt text: Picture of a diverse group of women with disabilities at an IDA’s workshop in Ethiopia.)

Organizations of women with #disabilities are demanding their space in all aspects of political participation:

  • …from accessible campaigns, debates+voting procedures, and the right to run for election. The empowerment of all women cannot happen without women with #disabilities. Read more: https://bit.ly/31CLG70 @MyEDF @UN @ADF_Secretariat #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

(Alt text: Conceptual picture where we can see a woman raising her hand to protect herself from violence.)

➡Voices of women with #disabilities are not being heard. ➡Their capacities are not being recognized. Humanitarian actors should seek advice from women with disabilities said Rosario Galarza, IDA. Learn more here https://bit.ly/32bTmQZ #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21

(Alt text: Picture of a diverse group of women with disabilities at an IDA’s workshop.)

Despite the best efforts of States, women and girls with #disabilities continue to suffer disproportionately from violence and abuse, facing unique and pervasive barriers to the realization of their human rights.

  • The #COVID19 pandemic had led to a significant worsening of the situation as victims were often confined in the same households as their abusers.
  • The double set of risks affecting those at the intersection between gender and disability were rarely reflected in disaggregated data, and rarely addressed by national measures.

(Alt text: Picture of a diverse group of women with and without disabilities in the rural community of Nuevo Kaqui, Peru.)

IDA calls on all actors to ensure the safety and dignity of women and girls with disabilities. #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21 @UN_Women

(Alt text: Picture of a girl and her mom discussing on sign language.)

Working and living independently

“The procedures against the #Covid19 make an accent on social distance. But, these were not friendly to persons with Deafblindness, most especially women with Deafblindness because you have to move with a guide…

  • And then when we talk about food distribution, in my country, Uganda, there was a policy that all people would get food at their door.
  • It does not favour women with Deafblindness because we are not among the target group that the government targeted for food distribution,” said Agnes Abukito. See what else was discussed at the Generation Equality Forum https://bit.ly/3oNjE3N #DisabilityInclusion #IDPD21 @WFDeafBlind
