Newark, NJ: City on the Rise!
Newark, N.J., isn’t merely part of our address; it’s an integral part of who and what we are, and has been since our founding more than a century ago. “We” are thousands of students and educators, the staff who support them, and the leaders who guide them all. We come from across the state, across the nation and across the oceans, but we aren’t merely visitors.
We take pride in being a deeply engaged urban university located in New Jersey’s largest, oldest city. Our urban environment shapes and defines us in special ways, from classes that use Newark itself as a learning laboratory, to partnerships with local corporations and non-profits. Our academic, cultural and recreational programs attract visitors all year round, while our law school’s clinics provide legal services to the public, and our business school offers services for business start-ups. Rutgers students tutor and mentor in area schools, volunteer at local food banks, and more.
We also play a vital role in economically reinvigorating and developing our home city. As our enrollment has grown, we have added new academic buildings, residence halls and retail stores, making ours a real 24/7 campus. Nearby are restaurants, and cultural and recreational facilities such as the Newark Museum, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the Bears and Eagles Stadium, and the Prudential Arena.
Rutgers University - Newark. We are far more than a collection of buildings and grounds; we are a community of learning, leadership, and commitment. We strive always to be a good neighbor whose strength of character is defined not merely by actions, or words or history, but by the combination of all three.

Coaches
Head Coach Conor Kortmann
Rutgers University-Newark named Conor Kortmann, the former assistant baseball coach at Babson College, head coach of the Scarlet Raiders baseball team in February 2021.
Kortmann has a strong track record as a baseball coach, helping Babson College to the 2019 College World Series in Cedar Rapids, IA, three-straight NEWMAC regular season titles from 2017-19, consecutive conference championships in 2017 and 2018, 4 straight seasons finished ranked top 25 in the country, and 2 consecutive seasons finished ranked #3 in the country in 2019 & 2020.
"Conor is a great fit for our program here at Rutgers University-Newark, I truly believe he'll help us continue the success we've had," said Athletic Director Mark Griffin. "In a robust applicant pool, he stood out among all of them with his understanding of the game and his plan to bring the same championship caliber mindset he had at Babson to Rutgers University-Newark."
Before returning to Babson College in a coaching capacity, Kortmann spent time with the Boston Red Sox as a Video Ops/Player Development Intern. There he worked with the coaches, players, and front office personnel on all aspects of the Minor League Baseball team.
Kortmann continued to say, "It is with great pride that I come back to my home state of NJ to lead Rutgers-Newark Baseball. Rutgers-Newark is a University and program on the rise. The combination of a Rutgers University degree, the biggest job market in the world, NYC just 10 miles away, and the core foundation of players already in place, makes Rutgers-Newark Baseball a unique place that I look forward to leading and working towards continued success."
Kortmann spent seven seasons with Babson College and had tremendous success during his tenure. In addition, Kortmann received a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Babson College in 2018.
Kortmann has 3 siblings: Fallon played softball at Rutgers University (New Brunswick), Kerrie played softball at St. Joe's University, and Shannon played softball at Babson College. Additionally his father has spent the last 26 years as the head softball coach at LIU Brooklyn. Kortmann earned his MBA from Babson College in 2018. In addition to his baseball experience, Kortmann volunteers with Our Treat, a non-profit organization which strives to deliver meals to families with loved ones battling cancer.

Coach Miller graduated from Teaneck High School in 2001 where he was a four-year letter winner. He went on to play collegiate baseball for Guilford College in North Carolina. Miller completed his career there as a captain with the 10th most hits in Guilford history and the fifth-best single season batting average (.414).
In 2016, he began coaching at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, NJ and in 2018 he helped the team win their first league title since 1963.
Josh owns two family restaurants, Roberts Pizzeria and La Cocina, in Newark, NJ.
Coach Eric Reardon - Pitching
Eric Reardon was named Pitching Coach in Summer of 2021. After an extensive search, Eric stood out head and shoulders above a deep pool of candidates, and will be a welcomed addition to the coaching staff while also pursuing a Masters Degree in Economics.
Eric is no stranger to Rutgers; coming out of high school he was one of the top players in the state, and chose to stay home and represent NJ at Rutgers – New Brunswick. He just finished a terrific career at RU as captain of the team… look up his stats in the record books and you will see he is one of the best and most dependable pitchers to ever wear the Rutgers uniform (6th all time in appearances for Rutgers - New Brunswick).
Eric has been coaching with the Baseball Warehouse travel organization the past several years, and has demonstrated a real talent for coaching and helping others reach their potential. Most importantly, he is a well respected and first-class person who embodies what we value in our program, and will be a great asset to our pitching staff and player development at Rutgers Newark.
Coach Marquay Mayo - Infield, Baserunning, Recruiting
Quay Mayo joined the Coaching Staff at Rutgers Newark in summer 2021 after 2 seasons as an assistant coach at Raritan Valley Community College from 2019-2020. At Rutgers Newark, Coach Mayo will work primarily with infielders, baserunners, and recruiting.
In addition to his prior experience with Raritan Valley Community College, Mayo has coached for Clemente Baseball (ABCCL), the Trenton Generals (ACBL), South Brunswick High School, and Jonathan Dayton High School. Coach Mayo played college baseball at Centenary University (2010-2014).
We look forward to Coach Mayo helping us to aid in the development of our players. He brings tremendous energy, knowledge, and professionalism to everything he does and will make a terrific coach on our staff.
