WFSD Unity Week 2022

The William Floyd School District recently celebrated its annual Unity Week, a celebration of unity, peace and diversity within our schools. This year's theme was "Peace and the Environment!" Please enjoy this recap along with a video featuring artwork from students across the district!

Tangier Smith Elementary School students K-5 recently gathered on the field near their school, dressed in white, to create a giant peace sign which was photographed by a drone! This was the re-creation of a photo the school previously did seven years ago, which was captured from the ladder of a fire truck! (Click photos to enlarge)
Fourth-grade classes at John S. Hobart Elementary School also created a peace sign of their own! Students in Mrs. Spencer, Ms. Warren, Mrs. Engasser, Mrs. Perrette, Mrs. Guzik, Ms. Fehmel, and Mr. Young’s classes gathered on the field to show their support for peace and unity! Last year's image had the fourth graders spelling out the word "UNITY" in front of their school! (Click photos to enlarge)

William Floyd Middle School (WFMS) students enthusiastically joined together to celebrate Unity Week by focusing on this year's theme, "Peace and the Environment." Mrs. Taisler’s and Mr. Kosta’s art classes decorated dots for a wall-sized interactive display after reading the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds in celebration of International Dot Day. The purpose of this story is to encourage students to reach their full creative potential while making their mark on their own dot. WFMS students were invited to pose as a butterfly or tree trunk (second image) to bring this artwork to life. Many sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students also united together to promote peace and the environment by creating inspirational banners, grade-level chain links bearing messages of unity, and personal notes of peace on leaves displayed on our National Junior Honor Society's unity tree! Also at John S. Hobart Elementary School, second-grade students worked together to create a mural for Unity Week. Each student traced and cut out their hand, which was glued into a big heart and adorned in the hall for all to see. "The students learned that there is strength in unity, beauty in diversity, power in kindness, and courage in truth," said second-grade teacher Lisa Gonzalez. One student representing each second-grade class is pictured!
In honor of Unity Week, second-grade classes at Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School participated in a Pennies for Peace project to benefit those affected by Hurricane Ian in Florida. Students learned all about what a community is, the various communities that they belong to, and how community service can help others in need. Since Hurricane Ian was one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the United States, the students were inspired to connect and donate pennies throughout the week for the Hurricane Ian Relief Fund. Altogether, the students collected and donated $150 to help the cause. Jessica Catalano, Ashley Kilanowski, Kathleen Milano Renee Miller, Amanda Tropeano and Kim Vecchio's classes participated!
