Symbolism with Simon from William Golding's "Lord of the Flies" Kaitlyn Soto

Simon represents the idea of moral goodness and innocence in the midst of evil. While all of the other boys are becoming more and more savage, Simon stays the same throughout the book.

Simon is one of the few members who has always been nice to Piggy, even before the groups became split and Ralph's group relied on him. He gave Piggy his food when Jack didn't want to feed him and he picked up Piggy's glasses after Jack punches Piggy in the face.

“We used his specs,” said Simon, smearing a black cheek with his forearm. “He helped that way.”(42)
Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks. Piggy cried out in terror: “My specs!” He went crouching and feeling over the rocks but Simon, who got there first, found them for him. (71)
Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy, who grabbed it. (74)

While Simon is considered one of the younger member of the older boys, he still makes sure to help out the littluns whenever he can. He grabs any fruit that the littluns can't reach on their own and gives it to them.

Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands. (56)

Simon's death also gives a choice example of his innocence. Simon is killed when he goes to tell the boys the news that the beast they were so scared of was dead. The boys kill him in their savagery as they mistake him for the beast. All he wanted was to tell the boys that they have no reason to be afraid anymore and he is killed while doing so. This undeserved death is a great example of Simon's goodness and innocence compared to the other boys who killed him.

As Simon thought this, he turned to the poor broken thing that sat stinking by his side. The beast was harmless and horrible; and the news must reach the others as soon as possible. (147)
