My first real contact with Buddhism came through a Zen Buddhist teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. I had picked up a book of his about death and grief titled No Death, No Fear, in hopes of better serving a Buddhist patient/family on our hospice. As I began reading, a perception of the world opened up to me, familiar but somehow new. Using simple analogies from nature, like the life of an ocean wave or the cycle of a cloud, Hahn illustrated concepts like inter-being ( the interconnected nature of all things) and impermanence, (the idea that everything is in a state of continual transformation, without a concrete or static state). The earth as his witness, it rang in my heart as a powerful wisdom. The clouds in my mind had opened up.
The following works are based on this wisdom and are an attempt to see all things, including ourselves, in the cloud- like space of transformation and interdependence. They invite you to bring that space into present mind through color and form.
So if you are looking for something to further your vision, look up and inward to the skies. And say hello to the illuminating clouds.
