On Saturday April 8th, the Mammoths competed at our only home meet of the year, the Amherst Spring Fling! The day was highlighted by three school records:
Hammer
Charlie Spurrell setting the School Record in the Hammer (video below)
The day kicked off with the Hammer Throw at 11 AM and on his first throw, Charlie Spurrell broke the school record in the Hammer with a throw of 52.60 meters! This was his first time competing in the Hammer at the collegiate level and Charlie had a fantastic day, taking down the school record from 1983 and winning the event!
Also in the Hammer, David Brown enjoyed his first hammer competition with legal throws, placing third with a great mark of 47.18 meters (154' 9")! Jack Renda placed ninth with a season best throw of 38.16 meters (125' 2") and Hugh Lemmon-Kishi enjoyed a fantastic day, setting a personal best with a throw of 35.68 meters (117' 1") to place twelfth!
In the Women's Hammer, Beth Martin threw a season best with a throw of 41.02 meters (134' 7") to place fourth.
Discus
The Mammoths enjoyed a great day in the Discus, where Deb Thayer threw a season best of 31.34 meters (102' 10") to place seventh and Beth Martin also threw a season best of 31.49 meters (103' 4") to place fifth! Competing in the discus for the first time ever, Morgan Rome placed fourteenth with a throw of 28.35 meters (93' 0").
In the Men's Discus, Hugh Lemmon-Kishi threw a huge season best mark of 33.84 meters (111' 0") to place ninth! Jack Renda threw a season best mark of 31.30 meters (102' 8") to place fourteenth and Temidayo Bambe competed in discus for the first time in college, placing nineteenth with a throw of 24.66 meters (80' 11").
Pole Vault

The second School Record of the day happened over on the runway, where Mia Bawendi demolished the School Record in the Pole Vault, clearing 3.60 meters (11' 9.75") on her last attempt at the height to win the pole vault! Mia competed well throughout the competition, making a clutch clearance on her third attempt at 3.15 meters to stay in the competition and then cleared 3.45 meters on her first attempt, breaking the previous school record of 3.40 meters before going onto clear 3.60 meters! Payton Sorensen and Jordan Hecker both cleared 3.15 meters (10' 4"), placing eighth and tenth, respectively, showcasing the depth of the pole vaulters, as Payton tied her personal best and Jordan enjoyed great jumps!
In the Men's Pole Vault, Alex Robin tied his personal best by clearing 4.15 meters (13' 7.25") to place second! Jack Trent competed in the Pole Vault for the first time since May and enjoyed a great day, clearing 3.55 meters (11' 7.75") to place seventh and Zach Villegas had a solid day in the pole vault, clearing 3.25 meters (10' 8") to place eighth.
3,000 Steeplechase

In the first running event of the day for the Mammoths, Mary Kate McGranahan made a splash by winning the steeplechase! After leading the first two laps, a competitor took the lead. Mary Kate made a big push with 600 meters to go to reel in the leader and with 200 meters to go, she took the lead and won in a stellar time of 10:49, a twelve second personal best and Fifth All-Time at Amherst in the event! Claire Callon ran a great race while running with no competition around her, running a big season best time of 11:34!
Long Jump
It was a great day for the Amherst long jumpers as Adrian Friedman won the Men's Long Jump and Eliza Cardwell won the Women's Long Jump!
On his second attempt in the long jump, Adrian set a personal best with a huge jump of 6.90 meters (22' 7.75")! Eliza won with a jump of 5.42 meters (17' 9.5") and Anastasia Ioppolo placed third with a jump of 5.24 meters (17' 2.25")! Anaya Thomas placed fourteenth with a jump of 4.43m (14' 6.5").
4x100 Relay

In the second race of the day, the Men's 4x100 Relay erased the previous school record from 1970 from the record books, combining to run a time of 42.23 seconds! Ben Bell led off the relay, getting out of the blocks well and had a clean handoff to Cody Pierce. Cody ran a strong leg and ran up on Alex Nichols a bit in the handoff, and Alex adapted to receive the baton in the exchange zone. Jordan Harrison peeked back at Alex to receive the baton for the anchor leg, and with another successful pass, Jordan nearly walked down the competing teams in the final 100 meters of the race to place third and set the new school record!

Racing in the first heat of the 1500, Nick Edwards-Levin and Kolya Markov-Riss positioned themselves at the front of the field. With a lap to go, the lead was taken over by competing athletes and the two kept pushing in the final lap. Nick put in a well-timed kick in the last 150 meters and placed third in a personal best time of 3:58! Braedon Fiume ran a fantastic final 100 meters to place ninth in a time of 4:00, a great time in his first 1500 race ever! Kolya fought hard in the last lap and was rewarded with a big personal best time of 4:00! Will Merhige made up a huge gap in the final lap and powered through the finish line in a personal best time of 4:01! Lev Robertson hung well in the fast race and ran a personal best time of 4:06! Aydin Williams and Oliver Spiva worked well together in the following heat, both crossing the line in times of 4:07. Daniel Martin led his heat wire to wire and won in a personal best time of 4:18! Emmett McGrath pushed hard in the final lap to cross the finish line in a time of 4:24 and Paolo Canigiula finished in the same time after pushing the pace throughout the race.
In the Women's 1500, Sylvan Wold made a well-timed move in the second lap to position herself in the mix of the chase pack as a competing athlete took a commanding lead of the race. She then made a big push with 600 meters to go to begin to reel in the race leader, seized the lead with 150 meters to go and held off a competitor in the final 100 meters to win the race in a personal best time of 4:40, an eleven second personal best! Julia Schor kicked hard with 200 meters to go to position herself in sixth place, running a time of 4:43! In the same heat, Sophia Price ran well in her first 1500 race, running a time of 4:54! In the second heat, Nora Bannon ran a strong race, clicking off even splits to run a big personal best time of 5:09!
Noah Harris en route to winning the 110 Hurdles
110 & 100 Hurdles
Noah Harris placed third in the 110 Hurdles in a strong field, running a personal best time of 15.42 seconds and Jack Trent ran a wind-legal personal best time of 15.60 seconds to place seventh! Alton Machen ran well in his season opener, placing eighth in a time of 15.87 seconds! Both Zach Villegas and Alex Robin set personal bests, as they ran times of 18.63 and 18.72 seconds, respectively.
Eliza Cardwell won the 100 Hurdles in a great season opening time of 14.51 seconds and Arissa McGowan placed second in a big personal best time of 14.76 seconds! Anastasia Ioppolo placed fifth in a time of 15.25 seconds and Olivia Steele placed seventh in a time of 17.18 seconds.
400
Running out of the second heat, Jack O'Hara separated from the field in the final 200 meters to win his heat and the 400 overall in a huge personal best time of 49.80 seconds! In the same heat, Jai Dreher ran a collegiate best time of 51.10 seconds to place third overall! Ben Davis stepped down to the 400 and ran a strong time of 51.86 in the first heat!
In the Women's 400, Casie Eifrig placed fourth in a time of 59.23 seconds, running a great race out of lane one! Halle Hanna ran a collegiate best time of 1:01.81 to place second in her heat and Ava Zielinski employed a strong start to the race to run a time of 1:02.48! Mads Rabb placed third in her heat just behind Halle in a time of 1:02.55 and Caroline Wu and Susannah Auderset came across the line in near identical times of 1:04.49 and 1:04.57!
High Jump
In the high jump, Cam Heafitz and Gabe Dos Santos tied for second place as they both cleared 1.85 meters (6' 0.75")!
Triple Jump
Gabe Dos Santos placed third in the Triple Jump with a jump of 13.15 meters (43' 1.75") and Adrian Friedman placed fourth with a jump of 12.77 meters (41' 10.75")! In the Women's Triple Jump, Anaya Thomas placed third with a jump of 11.08 meters (36' 4.25"), Anastasia Ioppolo placed fifth with a jump of 11.02 meters (36' 2"), Annelise Romero placed eighth with a jump of 10.23 meters (33' 6.75") and Olivia Steele placed tenth with a jump of 10.03 meters (32' 11").

The 100 featured Mammoths competing in their second event of the day, as Alex Nichols and Ben Bell returned to the track after setting the school record in the 4x100 relay as they placed tenth and eleventh in times of 11.22 and 11.27 seconds, respectively! Ben Williams ran a season best time of 11.88 seconds. Mia Bawendi ran a time of 13.11 seconds in the 100 after setting the school record in the Pole Vault!
800
In the first heat of the Men's 800, Wilson Spurrell and Will Nagy placed fourth and fifth, respectively, both in times of 1:54! Will Nagy used a great kick on the second lap to set a personal best! Competing in the second heat, Charlie Clary ran a season best time of 2:01 and in the third heat, Luke Munch stepped down from the longer distance races to run a personal best time of 2:05!
Margo Pedersen, Bella Lozier and Piper Lentz all competed in the first heat of the Women's 800 and in the tight field, they placed eighth, ninth and tenth, running times of 2:19, 2:20 and 2:20 respectively, in solid season openers for all three in the 800! Ally Deegan raced in the second heat and competed hard for the win, placing fourth in her heat in a time of 2:21!
400 Hurdles
Ellis Phillips-Galucci won the 400 Hurdles in a stellar race, winning by nearly a full second in a great season opening time of 54.47 seconds! Tom Ye placed third in a fantastic race, setting a personal best with a time of 56.58 seconds! Noah Harris placed sixth in a time of 58.74 seconds and Max Spelke placed tenth in a time of 1:01.08, showcasing the Mammoths depth in the event.
In the Women's 400 Hurdles, Eliza Cardwell placed second in a great effort, running a time of 1:04.23 and Myeh Medina placed third in a time of 1:06.59! Artis Phillips placed sixth in a time of 1:09.18 and Val Finke placed eleventh in a time of 1:11.53.

Javelin
Over in the Javelin, the Mammoths showcased their depth in the event as Carolina Andrade placed third with a throw of 34.75 meters (114' 0"), Morgan Rome placed sixth with a throw of 32.53 meters (106' 9") and Annelise Romero set a personal best with a throw of 31.32 meters (102' 9") to place seventh! Payton Sorensen and Beth Martin both threw well, placing fourteenth and fifteenth with throws of 22.46 meters (73' 8") and 20.00 meters (65' 7"), respectively, which is a personal best for Payton!
In the Men's Javelin, Kevin Ryu's first throw was his best of the day with a throw of 41.36 meters (135' 8") to place fifth and Jack Renda placed ninth with a throw of 31.31 meters (102' 9").
Shot Put
David Brown won the Shot Put with a personal best throw of 14.12 meters (46' 4"), saving his two best throws for last! Hugh Lemmon-Kishi placed tenth with a throw of 11.39 meters (37' 4.5"), Jack Trent placed fourteenth with a throw of 10.47 meters (34' 4.25"), Zach Villegas placed sixteenth with a throw of 10.01 meters (32' 10.25"), Temidayo Bambe placed seventeenth with a throw of 9.01 meters (29' 6.75") and Alex Robin placed eighteenth with a throw of 8.63 meters (28' 3.75")

Jordan Harrison and Cody Pierce both ran strong races in the 200 running in the same heat, where Jordan placed second in a time of 22.14 and Cody placed fourth in a time of 22.18 seconds! Matt Gelin and Theo Woodward both competed well, as Matt placed fifteenth in a time of 23.18 seconds and Theo placed nineteenth in a time of 23.65 seconds. In the Women's 200, Arissa McGowan ran a huge personal best time of 26.72 seconds, placing tenth!
5,000
The next race on the track was the Men's 5,000, and Henry Dennen, George Cahill and Keon Mazdisnian ran in the lead pack together, pushing the pace as the race continued. Henry led the entire race and squeezed the pace down with two laps to go just as George worked his way up to Henry, and Henry won in a great time of 14:37 and George placed second in a fantastic time of 14:38, two amazing 5k debuts! Keon ran a strong race and placed fourth in a nine second personal best time of 14:48! Theo Dassin competed well, placing eighth in a time of 15:23 and Thomas Stephens ran hard in his pack, placing eleventh in a time of 15:47.
The Women's 5,000 was another exciting race, as Daphne Theiler and Allison Lounsbury immediately separated from the field with a competitor in tow, as the two worked together to push the pace. Allison made a big move with a little over three laps to go to distance herself from the field, running fast all the way to the finish line to win the 5,000 in a twenty second personal best time of 17:38! Daphne ran hard for third place, running a personal best time of 17:54!

4x400 Relay
The 4x400 Relay was the last track event of the day and the Mammoths made sure it was a fun event to watch! Wilson Spurrell led off the Men's 'A' team and got the Mammoths out to a great start, handing off to Ben Davis for the second leg in second place. Ben ran a strong final 200 meters to hand off to Jack O'Hara just behind the race leaders! Jack had a great kick in the final 100 meters to hand off to Kolya Markov-Riss with a narrow lead. Kolya ran hard for the whole lap and anchored the team across the finish line in a season best time of 3:22.28!
Nick Edwards-Levin led off the 'B' team in the second heat and handed off to Tom Ye in second place, and Tom took off as soon as he received the baton and put the Mammoths in the lead barely 150 meters into his leg! Tom powered through the rest of his leg and handed off to Charlie Clary with a solid lead. Charlie extended that lead on his leg and handed off to Braedon Fiume with even more of a lead, which Braedon held onto despite a challenge from a competing team, anchoring the Mammoths to winning their heat in a time of 3:26!
Mads Rabb led off the Mammoths 'A' team in the first heat and got the Mammoths out to a strong start, and she handed off to Casie Eifrig for the second leg. Casie ran a strong leg, putting the Mammoths right with the leaders! Piper Lentz got the Mammoths into the lead on her leg and handed off to Halle Hanna to anchor the Mammoths with the lead. Halle brought the Mammoths home to the victory in a season best time of 4:01!
The 'B' and 'C' teams competed in the second heat and Margo Pedersen led off the 'B' team and Artis Phillips led off the 'C' team. Caroline Wu got the baton from Margo in second place and Susannah Auderset got the baton from Artis in third place. Caroline kicked hard in the last 100 meters to hand off to Sylvan in the lead! Susannah maintained the Mammoths position in third and handed off to Claire Callon, running the unique 3,000 Steeplechase and 4x400 Relay double. Sylvan ran hard the whole lap and responded well to a challenge from a competitor, handing off to Julia Schor for the anchor leg square with the race leaders. Claire ran hard for the whole lap and handed off to Mary Kate McGranahan, also running the 4x400 relay after running the 3,000 Steeplechase earlier in the meet. After being bumped on the bumped on the handoff, Julia got out well in the first 200 meters and ran hard to the finish line, bringing the Mammoths 'B' team across the finish line in second place in the heat and Mary Kate brought the 'C' team across the line in fourth place in the heat!
We are so grateful for everyone's support at the meet yesterday! It was so great to have so many family, friends and alumni at the meet supporting the Mammoths which made the meet all the more special!
