Distance Education & Instructional Technology committee (DEITC) Newsletter October 2022

The eLearning Team continues to assist faculty through the QM course development process for courses being taught online. For an overview of the course development process, visit our Development Process of Distance Education Courses page.

Approval of Proposed Changes to QM Certification Process

The proposed changes were approved by the DEITC members as presented below:

  1. As soon as an alignment document is finalized, it will be sent to a faculty liaison (to be determined by each program/department) for their approval. If a faculty liaison has not been appointed, the alignment document will be sent to the program director or department chair.
  2. Every QM review report will be reviewed by the assigned faculty developer and assigned ID and make any recommended changes even if the standard has been met. Payment will not be processed until these changes have been made.
  3. Faculty assigned to teach a QM course, will receive a "Request for Feedback" form during the last week of the semester /term to give faculty ample time to complete it. Our team will review information provided and inform faculty developer and faculty liaison and assist on any revisions that need to be made to the master course. Depending on the number of revisions needed, a recertification of the course may be triggered.
  4. Alternate version reviews will require three reviewers instead of just one to ensure a comprehensive review.

Dr. Abrego will send email to College Deans requesting the name of the faculty liaison this week.

QM Courses Certified

The following fifteen courses have been QM certified since May of 2022.

Top Hat Grant

Dr. Alfredo Ramirez, Jr. secured a Title V grant which includes a one-year, campus-wide subscription for Top Hat, an in-class polling and response system, that will take effect Spring of 2023. The eLearning group will be conducting informational sessions in the upcoming weeks.

There will be a session at Learning Technologies Week about the use of Top Hat for larger classes and as an effective test taking solution. The presenters are Dr. Jenel Cavazos, an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Oklahoma and our own Dr. Donovan Weight, Associate Professional of History. We encourage you to attend these sessions to see what Top Hat has to offer and how it can help you impact student success from day one.

Learning Technologies Week (LTW) 2022

The 13th annual LTW will take place during the week of October 31st - November 4th, 2022. Thanks to all the faculty that submitted their presentation proposals. We will be showcasing 16 sessions from all five tracks that week. TAMIU faculty have prepared sessions on any of the following tracks: Learning Technologies, Teaching Online, Universal Design for Learning/Accessibility, Social Media and Research.

We encourage you to share the program and invite your colleagues to register and attend! Remember: the more sessions faculty attend, the more times their names will be entered into the drawing for giveaways. The giveaway will take place on Friday, October 28th at 1:00 p.m. CST. The winners will be drawn at random using Wheel of Names.

The LTW 2022 sessions will be broadcasted LIVE. The link for the broadcast will be made available in the *** Faculty Resources by eLearning course found in your My Courses module in Blackboard. LIVE broadcast participants are not eligible to participate in the giveaways nor interact with the presenters.
