Artist Statement

True to the concept of “designer as author,” I originated all of the primary elements in this triptych including the photography, poetry, and design. From panel to panel, it tells the story of the dramatic shift in emotions I experienced during an intense and challenging summer in England in my early 20s. At the time, I turned to photography as an artistic outlet, and the three images in this work were captured on what I like to think of as my “miracle roll”—a roll of film that included several more than the usual number of printable images.

This summer—2022—I revisited the three images featured in this triptych and decided to write a verse to accompany each image based on the respective themes of contentment, heartache, and cautious optimism. The final step was then to typeset the poetry and compose expressive layouts for each of the 12˝ x 16˝ panels.
