project 6: The art of social change
CONTEXTUAL STUDIES ESSAY PROJECT
PLANNING
Initial Research
I initially wanted to research feminism as my social change, particularly the pressure of beauty standards with female body hair. I found a couple of interesting artists and activists during my research.
Esther Calixte-Bea
Left photo from (London, 2020). Esther Calixte-Bea is a multi-disciplinary artist; her work continually communicates a discussion around the social pressures on having body hair as a woman. The photo on the left is from her self-photography series titled The Lavender Project, where she created a dress that on one side showcases her chest hair, and the other completely covers it. The photo below (Calixte-Bea, 2018) is the artist's piece Growth from 2018, which examines the abundant methods of hair removal that are introduced to girls at a young age due to the normalisation of hairless women and social pressures.
Zoulikha Bouabdellah
The left photo is from (1-54.com, n.d.) and shows L'Araignée (2015). The same website says: "Zoulikha Bouabdellah is the daughter of Hassen Bouabdellah, a film director and Algerian writer, and Malika Dorbani, ex-head of the Algiers Fine Art Museum. In 1993, while the civil war was underway, her family chose to leaving Algeria and settle in France. With an interdisciplinary artistic practice, Bouabdellah’s works draw from this diverse and global identity" (1-54.com, n.d.).
I chose not to use this artist as while I am intrigued by the visual quality of their work, it would require further research to understand the context as I am not at all familiar with the geo-political context surrounding this piece.
Ayqa Khan
Initial Chosen Artist: Caroline Walker
I initially chose to study Caroline Walker's work. Below is my analysis of her painting on the left.
This is a painting by Caroline Walker (born 1982). Walker explores the contemporary struggles of women in everyday society through her paintings, which she bases off of her own photographic work. The artist creates a unique viewpoint into everyday moments and puts a spotlight onto women who's struggles may be overlooked and their hard work taken for granted. I really like the contrast of cold and warm tones in Walker's paintings - the house's exterior is clearly separated from the bright interior, drawing the viewer's eyes inwards to see the captured moment. The artist's paintings combine subframing and warmth to draw all the attention towards the woman as the painting's subject. The artist's work subtly creates a feminist dialogue, creating appreciation for unsung women's struggles and challenges that arise in everyday life.

Change of Artist
I chose to change my artist to Esther Calixte-Bea as I feel I have more to say about her ideals and her motivation as I relate more to her work.
Analysis of The Artist's Work - Esther Calixte-Bea
I started by analysing the painting. This allowed me to become familiar with the piece and discover topics to discuss in my essay.
Planning
Essay Structure
With this I completed my plan for the structure of the essay, as seen below.
Essay Structure as Questions
Writing
Intro + Colour (992 Words)
I started writing my essay. I knew I would go over the word count after I completed the introductory paragraph, but I plan to keep writing until my essay is finished to have a full essay to submit for one of my application portfolios. After writing the whole of the colour paragraph though, I may change my contextual studies question to just talk about colour, as I already have a decent essay that I can cut down before I start analysing the symbolic imagery and the title.
Slight Change to Question + Conclusion (82 words)
With this version complete, all that is left is to cut it down for the final 750 word version (currently at 1074 words).
Final Contextual Studies Essay - 748 Words

project 7: speculative futures
Brief: Create an animation or film showing a societal problem either solved or made worse 10,000 years into the future. Maximum 2 minutes.
Notes on The Project
Brainstorming and Planning
A mind map I made while we had a group discussion about our theme. We originally discussed overpopulation and moving to a different planet, before finalising our theme of a fungal-overgrown world post nuclear war.
Group Discussion, Planning Research and Organisation
We created a shared Google Doc to plan and organise ourselves. Below are screenshots showing our thought processes and plans.
For this project I am interesting in sound design and editing to make the final outcome impactful. As all of us are interested in animation, it will be helpful to split up the work into roles. With my experimentation, as well as looking at the visual design of our ideas, I want to explore how we can communicate ambience, mood, and texture through diagetic and non-diagetic sound design.
Summary of our Theme
Planning and Deciding What to Research
Here we listed everything that related to our world that we had to research to understand our ideas better. Later we delegated this research between us.
Deciding the Environment that Would be Destroyed
This is the list and plan we made to decide what our world would be like. We plan to have the environment have been destroyed and overrun by fungus, but first we had to decide how far into the future the civilisation would have survived to.
Project Timeline
This is a plan Connor and I made to plan out the two weeks we have for this project. I felt it was necessary to create a schedule and stick to it in order to have time for all of the animation and editing.
Alternative Potential Ideas
RESEARCH
Contextual Research and Analysis (my research)
Bladerunner (1982)
How it relates to our animation: From this opening scene we can see how the directors have introduced a dystopian world; they combined familiar imagery (a city landscape) with new imagery (flying cars, giant flames/explosions) to ground the audience within the grounds of reality of this universe.
Annihilation (2018)
How it relates to our animation: From this scene we can get an idea of what fungus spores and infections look like through practical effects. It is especially relevant to our project as we can see a version of how fungus could affect a human body. We can also see how the directors have placed the fungus where it would make sense biologically for spores to grow - an empty swimming pool is the perfect place as it is already damp, which fits the criteria of where fungus grows. This is a great example of merging a fungus overgrowth with everyday environments.
2067 (2020)
How it relates to our animation: From this trailer we can see how tension has been created through the immediate introduction of conflict. This clip is a great example of how we can create a current problem and make a futuristic world from it, and then take it further into the future. We can see from it how they have created contrast between two alternate futures through environment and character.
Cuphead (2017)
Throughout our discussion the suggestion of traditionally-created backgrounds was made. In relation to this, I have looked into the video game Cuphead (2017), which features both traditional backgrounds with animation over the top. Below are 5 examples of the watercolour backgrounds which appear throughout the game.
How it relates to our animation: Cuphead (2017) is an amazing example of traditional illustration media combined with animation. The whole game is made using old-style cartoon animation techniques. If we want to explore painting traditional backgrounds, Cuphead is an excellent example of how to create vibrant and detailed backdrops without the subjects getting lost in over complicated visuals.
Consuming Spirits (2012)
During our discussion using puppetry was suggested. Below is an example of combining puppetry with animation, along with the previous idea of using traditional backgrounds. In this case, the puppetry has been created with watercolours and close details, emphasising the defining characteristics of each puppet. The animation is by Chris Sullivan, the trailer is from (Rotten Tomatoes Coming Soon, 2013).
How it relates to our animation: This trailer shows examples of both hand drawn animation and puppetry that we can use as inspiration if we decide to use puppetry in our animation.
Alternate Style of Puppetry
Two alternate styles of puppetry are the examples Tale of Tales (1979) - seen above (Pryakhina, 2015) - and Hedgehog in the Fog.
Inspiration from Real Life Weather
This or something similar could work very well for the sky and atmosphere of our universe. The green sky "occurs when a storm cloud carries lots of water and allows primarily blue light to pass though it, the blue light mixes with the Suns red light, and creates a green sky" (astronomybasics, 2023). This makes sense with our fungus overgrowth as fungus needs moist and damp conditions to spread.
As previously mentioned, we spilt our research between the group. I researched contextual links whilst the others each had their own topic of research. We discussed afterwards so we had an understanding of the functionality of our world. For example, the conditions fungus needs to grow in - damp, wet, warm.

ETHICS - Techno Orientalism
My notes on Techno-Orientalism.
Reflection
I think with our project we won't be affected by techno-Orientalism, as our world is destroyed and not technologically advanced. This presentation has been very eye-opening to a problem I didn't know existed, and we will make sure that we avoid it in our own work to ensure our practice is ethical.
Fiction Future Writing: World Building
Fleshing out the world. I began with writing one sentence summarising the world, and then added more detail while looking at the environment, jobs, cultures and history of the created world.
Synopsis
After fleshing out the world, I wrote a piece of prose as the synopsis for our world from my view.

ILLUSTRATOR WORKSHOP - Parallax
Notes on Parallax
Notes on Illustrator
Practising Making Shapes
In order to learn how to draw and make shapes on the Illustrator desktop version, we traced over shape templates. Below are my traced shapes. I found it easy to make shapes perfectly in line after learning about the ruler tool.
Experiment - City Scape
Making the Final Layers
For the final parallax I decided to redo my experiment. I really liked the colour palette and thought that the wacky shapes are similar to our plans for the future architecture in our world. Below is the process of making the layers to animate. I started with the clouds, which I struggled with at first, before making all of the buildings. I again coloured them similarly to my experiment, and grouped them in their layers. After moving the clouds to the foreground, I made a river bed to separate the buildings from the planned river. After layering three rows of waves over the top, I made the bridge walkway. I originally had this higher in the frame and on stilts, but I moved it down to leave space for the waves. I used subtle gradients on the sky, river bed, and walkway to subtly shade the shapes. After completing the illustration, I saved each layer in its own illustrator file.
Turning Illustration Into Parallax
Firstly, I duplicated the different layers in order to have extra to move around the shot. I then adjusted the size to fit the screen, however, this turned out to be too blurry as it was too small. To overcome this I adjusted it again and removed some of the excess copies. It ended up appearing a little bit blurry in After-Effects, but it was better than it was before. After importing it into After-Effects, I resized all of the layers before starting to add the animations. I animated the clouds first, having them move in the opposite direction to the rest of the layers. After making everything move, I realised that the movement was too quick in the wrong places and messed with the sense of perspective. I played around for a bit before ending up with the final version. I changed the length of my animation from 25-30 seconds to 10 seconds in order to allow the program to change the speeds of different parts.
Milestone Versions of my Parallax
Final Version
I am pleased with my final version, I really like the colour palette that subverts the normal atmosphere. Looking back on it, I would make the river flow the opposite way to match the wind pushing the clouds. I also think it would be interesting to separate the building layers to move by themselves to incorporate more depth and break up the two dimensional feel. It was fun to create a landscape and explore depth using colour, even before animating, and I feel I have learnt lots of new skills in both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After-Effects.

Storyboard
Notes
Toby's Storyboard
This is the story board Toby created, focusing on two characters living in the post-apocalyptic world. The story board is effected as it uses characterisation to explore the effect of the environment on the surviving humans, as well as putting focus on the environment with the juxtaposition of the close suffering of the man in his room, and the vast expanse of the destroyed and mutated landscape.
Using DND as a Method of Script Writing
Notes on Dungeons and Dragons
Environment Design
This is our group's DND landscape sheet filled out, with information about our created environment.
Creating a Character
This is the character sheet for a character I designed. I wanted to look at an alternate effect of the fungus on humans, so I looked at how a child's continually growing body would react to being mutated with fungus DNA. I wanted to create a character who instead of being degraded by the fungus, evolved with the fungus and was living in our wasteland environment.
Our Characters Interacting
Overcoming Obstacles and Improving Quality With Film
POST-PRODUCTION
Group Decision of This Week's Plan
The rest of the group chose to make our own storyboards and character designs and put them all together at the end of the week. Due to this decision I created my own storyboard for my own version of our project, and decided to animated that.
Planning My Animation - Story Boarding
My Story Board
As we were all making our own storyboards and character designs, I made my own storyboard with previous ideas of mine for how the final outcome would look. I incorporated the man on the bed from the previous storyboard by Toby, as I think it creates a good transition from looking at environment to looking at the people left in the environment.
Reasoning for my Story Board
Below I analysed and noted down the effects of my visual choices (in red). I also noted the planned times for each shot.
Shot Order
Below is the shot order and positioning of the title.
Clarification/Rethink of Shot Order and Contents
Below is a second version of the storyboard where I added some changes to the overall flow. There are some added shots where I rethought how to showcase the mutated human while keeping mystery, tension, and still creating a sense of distance and emptiness within the environment.
Animation Process
Creating the Background and Foreground for the First Shot
Below is the timelapse for my process creating this illustration. I drew the mushroom off of a reference from a real mushroom as seen above (The Wildlife Trusts, n.d.). I contemplated changing the mushroom's colour to something more alien (such as pink/purple), however ended up changing it back to be a more realistic colour as it matched better with the colour the city ended up being - a mix of cyan and grey. To create lighting and shadows, I overlaid lime (highlights) and dark blue (shadows) and applied different effects to create the right effect.
Creating a Focus Shift for Animating Frames
I blurred the foreground and background individually to create the effect of camera focus shifting from the foreground to the background. I then saved each different level of blurriness to use as frames in the background of the animation.
Reference Material for the Animation - Wood Cockroach
I wanted to use a cockroach that could fly, so I researched which ones could and I found that the Wood Cockroach could fly and looked simple enough to both animate and recognise as a cockroach. I chose to use a cockroach both to show the size of the mushroom in the animation, and also to indicate to the audience that the environment is inhabitable to most creatures apart from cockroaches, which can survive in many environments and are hard to kill.
Animating
I started by adding a title and setting the illustration as the background in Flippaclip. I chose that font as I felt it fit the best out of the limited options available, but I don't think it is perfect (particularly as there was no lower-case version of this font and it is too uniform and serif) so I may change it at a later point.
I then marked out the timing and spacing for roughly where I wanted the cockroach to be.
I then used the reference images to create a silhouette of a cockroach, and added the frames for it scuttling in. I originally planned to add more colour and detail to the cockroach, however I think the silhouette works quite well to show it hasn't been affected by the environment.
I then spaced out the roach's movement as it slides down the mushroom, and I drew it flying away.
Next I filled in the slide movement.
After that I added green marks to time where the focus shift will occur.
I added the shift in focus but I felt it looked a bit clunky as it would refocus every 4 or so seconds, which spread it out too much.
Finally, I changed the shift focus to be in a shorter duration with only 2 frames per each blur level, which I felt worked out a lot better.
Sound Design:
For the sound design I recorded any sounds I heard that I thought would fit. There are a couple of sound recordings with me stepping or walking on wet ground to maybe use in later shots with more fungus present. I wanted a sweeping wind sound to create a feeling of emptiness so I recorded the wind with the sound of the cars by my house. To make the sound of the cockroach scuttling I scratched on different surfaces, first on canvas and then on a cupboard (which I ended up using in the final sound design).
Below is the first attempt at timing the sound design for the cockroach movements.
This is the final version of the first shot with the full sound design. I am really pleased with the roach's motion and the timing of the sounds when it slides and flies away.
Dynamic Poses Workshop
Notes
Sketches from Reference - People
From this workshop I practised sketching from references with the website Line-Of-Action.com. I enjoyed this exercise as it focused on drawing and capturing real life on paper. We started with 30 second sketches before moving on to 1 minute sketches, all with covered human models. Then we did 30 second feline sketches. This exercise was to practice drawing using shapes as a basic structure, which I found enjoyable and became more confident with as I did more sketches. I found that the sketches where I used more shapes were more accurate in their proportions compared to the ones where I focused on the negative space.

Taking Photographic References From Life
As a group we posed for each other and took some photos to use as references for a storyboard/animation keyframing.
FINAL OUTCOME:
This is out final outcome for this project, including: concept, character and environment design, animation tests and storyboards, and the final animations. As the group was very busy with portfolios, some of the others did not make animations to piece together as a final exquisite corpse (what we had planned to do due to the importance of the portfolios). Because of this, we did not have a final GIF, rather we had my animation of the opening shot and Connor's animated parallax. The majority of our final piece relies on our intensive research to support our detailed world design. Below is the slideshow that comprises of our piece to present and hand-in.
EVALUATION AND REFLECTION
I am happy with my animation for the opening shot, particularly with the movement of the cockroach, the detail on the mushroom, and the change in focus from the foreground to the background. It was fun to create a whole new world with its own culture, history, and lore. I would have loved to finish illustrating and animating a proper final piece, but due to the lack of input from some groupmates as well as a lack of time this was the most I could complete before the deadline. I found the DND session where we made our own characters enjoyable, but was a little difficult to create a situation with my group as it was a bit hard to communicate with them, maybe due to a lack of interest from some of the others. I thoroughly enjoyed the sketching part of the dynamic poses workshop; it made me step away from rushing to get everything done and made me focus on enjoying creation and studying technique. The brief for this project was really fun, however I think it may have been more enjoyable to have worked either in a smaller group or by myself. I found this group more difficult to engage with than the previous one, I think mainly due to a difference in working pace and lack of productivity. Overall, this project was very exciting in theory, and ended up being fun but not well managed as a group (I would have preferred to start animating earlier and to have planned to split the animation more precisely). I did enjoy the world building and character design aspects very much.
