Climate Change and Environment Team

The Climate Change and Environment team are delighted to announce our Student Ambassadors are Edie (Year 9), Scott, Ava, Hollie (Year 8) and Grace & Ella (Year 7). Congratulations!

As part of their role, these pupils came up with three amazing ideas for The Houses of Parliament Climate Change and Environment Select Committee. They were able to meet with them virtually to discuss and feedback ideas to improve as a community and a government.

The three ideas developed by the pupils are:

1. CO2 traffic light system to ensure consumers are aware of the amount of CO2 used in the production of the products they use,

2. YCB Swap Shop – an app available for pupils to swap school uniform, prom dresses, etc.,

3. Social Media Influencer Law – all influencers are required by law to advertise at least one sustainable brand each year.

Our pupils thrived during the process and as a result we are now able to continue our work with the Committee next year. We are one of 6 schools in the UK, the only school in Wales and the only under 16 school selected to be apart of the Panel. A huge achievement for the school and these 6 pupils.”

Preserve Port Talbot

Year 3 and 4’s new theme is, ‘Preserve Port Talbot’. To start the topic off, we needed to discover what natural beauty spots are in our area in order to look after them long term. Our first educational visit was to Brombil Mountain, which is a short walk from our school. The children hiked up the Brombil before setting up camp at the top. The learners then took part in a carousel of activities, sketching landscapes, litter picking, minibeast hunting and flower scent making! After returning to school for a hard-earned lunch, we then ventured back out to Tollgate Park to make recycled flower chains.

Following this visit, the learners were keen to explore the rest of Port Talbot, wanting to adventure the streets in search of local artwork. Street art has become a popular attraction in our local area and the children were able to plot a route around Port Talbot finding the artwork! Public transport was the chosen method of transport learning vital life skills to navigate around the local system. At each site the children rated the designs and made comments on each one. After this the children had time to make a sketch of each illustration before moving on to the next destination.

After several bus journeys the children arrived at Aberavon Beach for lunch an ice-cream and an afternoon of activities including sand and shell sculptures. Our final trip on the service bus back to school with the children having a fun filled day. The children can not wait to venture into other areas of our local community before making a promotional video and campaign to protect and enjoy our beautiful town!

International News!

It is time to say goodbye to these super 6 young ladies. They were in Year 7 when the very first International Club meeting was held and they have been supportive of the Club from the very start.

Not even a pandemic could stop them. They got involved in online activities and were keen to get the club back up and running as soon as we could in Year 10.

They have worked so hard and during their time at YCB they have met and worked with pupils from Belarus, China, Spain and France. Their involvement in the club has given them the skills to plan and deliver lessons to younger members of the club and visitors, hold assemblies and present to larger groups and to truly appreciate their place in the world.

We will miss you all very much Izzy, Charlotte, Olivia, Grace, Lily-Mae and Megan. Wishing you all the very best for your GCSEs and for the future!

Health Matters

Sunscreen and Sun Safety

Sunburn increase your risk of skin cancer. Sunburn does not just happen on holiday. You can burn in the UK, even when it's cloudy. There’s no safe or healthy way to get a tan. A tan does not protect your skin from the sun’s harmful effects.

Aim to strike a balance protecting yourself from the sun and getting enough vitamin D from the sunlight.

Spend time in the shade when the sun is strongest. In the UK, this is between 11am and 3pm from March to October.

Make sure you:

• Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm

• Make sure you never burn

• Cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses

• Take extra care with children

• Use at least factor 30 sunscreen

Reha 2022 Trip to Bangladesh

Prague

Exciting News!

10 Pupils in Year 9 have been selected to represent Ysgol Cwm Brombil in an international project with NASA in Prague in the Czech Republic. The pupils will travel to Prague with Mrs Stead and Mr Marsh at the end of June. The EarthKAM program is run by NASA and has been around for about twenty years. Pupils will be working with our partner schools on a program which involves images being sent from the NASA satellite over time periods. The schools will take these images and compare them at different times to study the effect of global warming. The pupils will experiment and explore and will then pass on their experiences by working with other pupils in Ysgol Cwm Brombil when they return.

The project is funded by The Turing Project which provides educational journeys abroad. This is an opportunity for pupils to meet new people, learn new skills, sample new cultures, languages and food and offers sightseeing visits to cultural areas of local interest. This will help pupils increase their understanding of the world and give them a taste of new possibilities and adventures that they will hopefully continue to explore in the future as well as raise their lifelong aspirations.

9 out of 10 pupils that are part of the EarthKam project.

Heartstopper in the Library!

“Beautiful, inspiring, and heart-stopping.” These are the words of pupils describing the newest sought-after YA novel that has hit the library's shelves this term. A modern YA classic, ‘Heartstopper’ by Alice Oseman has taken the media (and the library) by storm! A graphic novel, telling the tale of the loveable couple Nick and Charlie as they navigate school and personal obstacles.
