The 2017 Smith Athletics winter season officially came to an end at the conclusion of the 2017 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Here is a look at how each program fared following a record breaking winter season from the Pioneers!
The Pioneers earned a 4th place finish at the Hamilton Invitational followed by a 2nd place showing at the Seven Sisters Championship. At the four day New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, the Pioneers broke five school records on their way to a 7th place finish.
Iris Afantchao and Frances Duncan each qualified for the New England Division III Championships in their first season as indoor track and field student-athletes. Afantchao competed in the high jump while Duncan finished 13th in the 1,000m with a time of 3:08.60.
Naranjo earned All-New England honors in the high jump event at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Open New England Indoor Championship. She finished with a mark of 1.61 meters (5'3.25"), finishing fifth in a field of Division I, II, and III competitors.
The Pioneers began the season with wins over Daniel Webster and Colby-Sawyer to clinch the 2016 Tyler Tip-Off Tournament crown. Guest-Pritchett and junior Paige Marquez were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The non-conference schedule was highlighted by a record-setting performance in Smith's 111-103 win over Westfield State on December 10. Guest-Pritchett (24 points), Mandy Castro (25 points), and Erin Hanley (23 points) each set career-highs for scoring in a game while the Pioneer offense set new program records for points in a game (111), field goal percentage (60.7 percent 37-of-61), made free throws (30), and free throw attempts (46). This win sparked a six-game win streak for Smith.
A career-high performance of 12 points and 10 rebounds from sophomore Katy McClellan powered the basketball team to a 77-70 upset of fourth-seeded MIT in the NEWMAC quarterfinals. It was Smith's first NEWMAC Tournament win since the 2013-14 season when the Pioneers beat Babson for a berth in the NEWMAC Championship game. The Pioneers advanced to semifinals and got knocked out by the eventual conference champion Babson Beavers.
