The Baker Blast Back to School Edition

School Communication

Most parent communications will be included in the Baker Blast. The Baker Blast is our bi-weekly newsletter that is sent out using School Messenger and Twitter. If you were subscribed to School Messenger last year (either at Baker or your child’s elementary school), then you are all set for this school year and don’t need to do anything. If you need to sign up for School Messenger, please contact the main office for more information 248-823-4600. You can follow us on Twitter @jdcross76 and @BakerMiddle.

There is still time to register and reserve a spot for your 6th grade student. We would like to have every 6th grade student participate and benefit from this orientation experience!

Schedule Pick Up

Registration Day is scheduled for Thursday, August 18th. Schedules and (3) photographers will be in the gymnasium. Please reference the times listed below to see when your student's grade level is scheduled. If you have more than one student at Baker, you may attend your earliest scheduled session and come in to pick up all of your student's schedules.

REGISTRATION DAY SCHEDULE

  • 8 am – 10 am (6th Grade)
  • 9:30 am – 11:30 am (7th Grade)
  • 11:30 am – 12:30 pm (Closed for Lunch)
  • 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm (8th Grade)

Parents, please know that we do not mail a registration packet home. All registration information and forms are online. If you are unable to attend, please contact our secretary, Joan Pangrcic at jpangrcic@troy.k12.mi.us to schedule an individual time to pick up your child’s schedule.

Students that cannot attend Registration Day will have an opportunity to have their school/ID picture taken on our picture make-up day September 8th. If you cannot come at your designated grade’s time, you may come during a different time frame; however, you may have a little longer wait.

To avoid long lines, we are requesting that students/parents fill out all applicable forms in advance of registration and come to registration at the times listed above. If you have children in two or more grades you only need to come once. We will be able to accommodate them at one time.

Picture Day

As a part of the Schedule Pick Up/Registration process, we will have (3) photography stations set up in the gymnasium. Please fill out the forms below to order pictures for your student. All students will take a picture and receive a school ID. These pictures will be used in our yearbook and Powerschool data base. If you are unable to attend registration, there is a picture make-up day September 8th. Picture Retakes are scheduled for Monday, October 17th.

Student Fines

Student fines that were not paid from previous school years are collected at registration. This includes Media Center fines. If your student has unpaid fines, we can accept cash, or a check made payable to Baker Middle School at registration.

Student Passwords

In an effort to improve security on the district network, all student passwords were reset to a NEW PASSWORD on Monday, August 8, 2022. Student passwords are used to gain access to district resources such as: Schoology, OneDrive, email, Clever, etc. We encourage all students to try their new password prior to the first day of school, by signing into OneDrive, Schoology, etc. with their district issued iPad.

New Password Format

The new password uses the following format: First Initial Last Name = (equal sign) 6 digit birthdate (mmddyy) EXAMPLE: John Doe, Date of Birth July 09, 2011 – Password: jd=070911

Secondary students (grades 6-12) will be prompted, the first Fme they use the new password above, to create a unique password which they can remember. Student-created unique passwords must be at least 9 characters in length and contain at least 3 of the 4 following:

  • lowercase letter
  • uppercase letter
  • special character (@, #, $, %, etc.)
  • number

Elementary students will not be required to create a unique password. Elementary students will continue to use the new password set by the district and will not be prompted to change it.

It is important that all students are logged into their District iPad with their District Apple ID. Once the student has successfully used the new password, all students should make sure that they are logged into their district issued iPad with their district Apple ID. The Apple ID is the full student email address and the newly established password. This allows students to connect to district resources and to engage with their teachers.

If your student has difficulty using the new password, or creating a new unique password, please contact the help desk at 248-823-5092 or email help@troy.k12.mi.us Technology support documents are also available anytime at: https://www.troy.k12.mi.us/techhelp

iPad Insurance

Please be sure to opt in at the beginning of the school year. The form and ability to opt-in for insurance will close on September 30th.

Each year, parents need to complete the iPad Responsibility Form and opt in or out of the optional iPad insurance program. The form and details about the optional insurance program are available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal under the Forms tab.

If your child has a district issued iPad, this form should be completed as soon as possible. The form and ability to opt-in for insurance will close on September 30th. Once the window closes, only students new to the district will have the option to purchase insurance for the current school year.

If you have completed the form but have not yet submitted your payment, please do so as soon as possible to avoid receiving further reminders. Payment instructions are on the form.

This form MUST be completed for EACH student. If your student does not have a district provided iPad, please indicate that on the form. Reminders will be sent weekly to those who have not completed the form.

  • Log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal at https://ps.troy.k12.mi.us
  • From the left menu, click the Forms icon
  • From the General Forms tab, select the Student iPad Responsibility & Optional Insurance Form
  • If you choose to “Opt-In” to the $10 annual insurance program, payments can be made on-line via the link in the form or by cash/check sent or delivered to the Troy School District Technology Department, 4420 Livernois Road, Troy, MI 48098.
  • If paying by cash or check, be sure to include your student(s) first/last name and student number with the payment. The form must be completed on-line prior to sending your payment.

Thank you, and if you have any questions, please email pssupport@troy.k12.mi.us

Student Health Insurance

The Troy School District is not responsible for any accidental injuries that occur to students while under the school’s supervision or participating in interscholastic sports.

Our School District has partnered with Student Assurance Services to give families the opportunity to purchase accident insurance for their student(s). When enrolled, this coverage provides financial assistance with your out-of-pocket medical expenses should your student sustain an accidental bodily injury.

Reasons to consider coverage for your student:

  • Your primary health insurance has a high deductible – copay – coinsurance.
  • No other insurance on your student.
  • Your student participates in a sport where unexpected injuries commonly occur.
