Class 4 Summer 1 LEARNING journey

Art

Our topic this term was ‘Wonderful Warhol’.

We began by exploring the artwork of Warhol and looked at the period of pop art.

We became art critics for some of Warhol’s masterpieces. We described his work and discussed what we liked and disliked.

We looked at tone and shading techniques.

We enjoyed exploring a range of media to complete a Warhol image. We used felt tips, coloured pencils and charcoal. We then compared the results.

We drew the missing box to complete the Warhol inspired art.

We thought about some popular objects of today and drew some of them using shading techniques to add texture.

We chose one popular object for our final piece.

We then looked at our colour wheels to help us mix colours for our final outcome.

Maths

This term, in maths we revisited place value and practiced writing numbers to 100 in numerals and words.

We used our knowledge of place value to complete the ‘one more, one less, ten more and ten less’ grids.

We then looked at statistics. Children learned to record and analyse data.

We revisited time but this time we learnt to tell the time to quarter to, quarter past and to 5 minutes. We were then able to answer problems related to time.

Finally, we revisited 2D and 3D shapes. Including lines of symmetry and regular and irregular shapes.

Literacy

In literacy we wrote a letter to Hermelin to express our apologies for being so mean to him just because he is a mouse.

We looked at past and present tense.

We then looked at apostrophes for possession.

We looked at the suffixes ‘full’ and ‘less’ and selected the correct words for the story.

We took extra care with our letter formation and presentation and we were really proud of our final pieces.

Our second text was an explanation text linked to science.

An explanation text tells the reader how something works or why something happens.

We decided to write an explanation text on how to grow a bean seed.

We looked at the features including technical vocabulary.

We highlighted any unfamiliar or tricky words and then we matched the word to the definition, creating our own glossary.

We then applied our skills to produce our own explanation text.

Science

This term we have been learning about plants.

We planted seeds and discussed what they need to grow.

We identified and named a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.

We identified and described the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.

Physical Education

We have been learning how to play team sports including rounders.

Religious Education

Our topic this term was ‘how faith contributes to community cohesion.’ First we discussed Christian values and gave examples of how these help the community.

We discussed how different religions have different rules and discussed the rules we follow at home and at school.

We considered how peace and calm helps Buddhists in the community. We discussed what makes us angry and the ways we can feel calm. We took a mindful walk around our school.
