THOMAS HOOKER

  • Thomas Hooker was a prominent, colonial leader, that was also a puritan.
  • Founded colony of Connecticut after a disagreement with the Puritan leaders in Massachusetts.
  • Known as an outstanding speaker and also a leader of Christian suffrage.

RELIGION

  • The Connecticut colony was a very strict Puritan colony.
  • Enforced a very strict moral code.
  • Puritans were a reform movement from the Anglican Church.

Geography & weather

  • Connecticut was the coldest of the 13 colonies.
  • Winters were very long, on the coast, they got about 20 inches of snow and near the northern mountains they got 40 to 50 inches.
  • However, summers were mild and short with occasional tornado's and thunder storms.
  • They are covered with thick forest and rocky soil, making it hard to farm.
  • Atlantic Ocean bordered southern Connecticut. Eastern Connecticut is very hilly.

JOBS

  • Most jobs in colonial Connecticut were unskilled or low-skill labor like sailors, farm hands, dock laborers and servants.
  • Shipbuilding and farming were high in demand. As was carpentry and lumber milling.
  • Clergy was a respectful career.

government

  • The Connecticut colony was a charter government.
  • Self governed colony.
  • Charter government established rules but allowed colonists a great amount of freedom along with it.
