“year 13 leavers 2022”

Mr Myles Hogarty

Greetings,

Today we gather as a College community to farewell our Year 13 Leavers as they move to another stage of their lives, whether it is further study or employment.

This College, as many of you have agree, has been your 2nd home for the last 5 or 7 years.

The place where you have grown physically, academically and spiritually. The place where you have practised our traditions, rituals and built relationships/ friendships/ Brotherhood with one another.

Our Scriptural Theme of Perseverance, Character and Hope this year was chosen very deliberately as our mantra after what we have been challenged by over the last 3 years.

We thank you for embracing this phrase and we hope that it has been of some motivation for you.

Leavers of 2022 You will have many memories of your experiences of life at De La Salle, these memories will be carried with you as you leave and will be etched permanently into your memories and become part of your character, they can never be taken away from you.

Just as important as the classes you attended, were the sports and music practises, cultural festivals, the Retreats, Camps, Field Trips, Masses, Liturgies and Assemblies.

As a Catholic, Lasallian school our Vision and goal is to produce, “Great Men of Faith, Service, Community and Excellence.”

We have educated Young men who leave us and who can make a positive contribution to the Community and make their community a better place.

As young men you have been fortunate to be offered such a range of opportunities, these didn’t happen by chance. These were provided by committed teachers who gave you these varied opportunities out of their deep and genuine concern for you, take some time before you leave to go and personally thank these people for what you have done for you.

Your College wishes to thank you for sharing your own talents and your efforts in making your College a better place.

Thank you for your contributions to the Academic, Sports, Music, Culture and Faith areas of De La Salle.

While the opportunities are there, without you stepping forward and throwing yourself into these areas, we as a College would not grow and improve.

Today you experience your last whole College Assembly, you being in the presence of 1000 young men you call “brothers”.

That is a special experience, one that you will probably not experience again, savour it.

This daily support and the presence of your peers is the thing that you will miss most. Our Old Boys who speak to you mention this often.

I urge you to keep strong and committed to your faith, never underestimate the power and gift of prayer as a daily focus in your life.

Be courageous young Christians, display Perseverance, Character and Hope and own your own story, it is exactly what your College and your families would expect you to do.

Let the values of Respect and Humility that you have learnt at De La Salle be seen in your final acts of school but also shared with the many new people that you will interact with over the next few years. We wear this tie as a symbol, the Cross is a constant reminder to me that our College is founded on the example of Christ and that bonds me with our Catholic Lasallian community. I am proud to wear it and our efforts as a Staff are always to lift and improve our College community inside and outside. You are challenged to do the same.

Let people see by your actions, that wearing that Cross on your chest for all these years has made you into a young man who has not only learnt the Gospel values of Christ but shows these in the relationships that he has with others.

While we farewell you today as your classes end, it is certainly not the last we want to see of you.

This is your College and you are always welcome to return and give back to it and the young men here. That is “Brotherhood” in action. Many of you have benefitted from that action with our Retreats, Mentoring, Camps, Rugby, League, Basketball, Music all supported by our Old Boys.

If we have been successful as a College in producing “Great men of Community,” we welcome you back to participate in and run these opportunities for your younger Brothers.

While today you may feel a little sad that you are leaving. Be happy that you have had a great Catholic, Lasallian education.

Be heartened that you have been at such a warm and nurturing school that has always placed you at the heart of all its plans.

The rest of the College wishes you our best as you prepare for your final exams and we ask that God keeps you safely in the palm of his hand as you travel on your new paths as young men.

.

God bless

"The WHY"

Throughout this year the Principal and other members of Senior Leadership have been doing enrolment interviews. One of the questions on the form is, Why do you want your son to come to De La Salle College? The answers vary enormously but there are common themes. The first is that it is a Catholic or faith-based school, that will help their son ‘walk in the path of Christian Values’. Second is ‘to get a good education’. Another is often to do with family connection, that many members of the same family have come here, and the family want to continue that tradition for their young son. In this answer the Brotherhood is often mentioned.

The overall feeling is that families are making a huge act of trust to put their boys into the hands of the school for their education for 5 to 7 years. Families want us also to continue and support the work that they have done in the formation of the character and faith of their boys. We understand the enormity of that act of trust and it is a privilege One parent I interviewed this week wrote.

‘We want our son to be educated in a safe Christian environment where we know he will be able to walk with his Christian values and become the young man we want him to be’.

Another wrote ‘De La Salle breeds young men with integrity, good hearts, service and great leadership skills which they can take into any occupation, and to top it off you have teachers that genuinely care about the boys’ education’

It’s crucial that even as we spend most of our time on the HOW, that we keep the WHY clearly and constantly in front of us.

special character

Director of Mission - Mr Kane Raukura

Dear Lasallians, families and friends of the College, as our senior students enter NCEA this week, I am reminded of the following words from our Founder. John Baptist de La Salle reminds us that “there is nothing to be gained by being discouraged.”

Way too often we allow our perception of what we believe the outcome should look like to cloud our judgement. No matter how hard we try, the utopia we are aiming for is never reached. Why is this? The world we see around us seems to confirm that, no matter how far we walk, we will not reach the horizon of the utopia we desire. Being aware of these things is already the first step to understanding that we have qualities, knowledge, stories and experiences to share with others and that seeing the world as it is now helps us to understand and accept that the present reality will continue to change.

Being adaptable, flexible and open to change is the hallmark of the ‘Lasallian’ utopia. We are invited to build new paths daily, to be fully abandoned to Gods will and to understand that our perception of what should be is not necessarily Gods perception. Our predecessors, mentors, Brothers, parents, grandparents or teachers have dreamed dreams that they have somehow passed on to us. How will we approach these dreams and work towards ensuring that the journey is fruitful and life giving? We must understand the joy is in the journey itself, not the final destination.

So, we must find solace in these words -

“there is nothing to be gained by being discouraged.”

We rise up each day, and regardless of the storms that may swirl around us, we keep ‘fighting the good fight of faith!'

God Bless and keep you always,

Mr. Raukura AFSC

Let Us Pray

Eternal Father, you are the maker of all things.

Everything and everyone is a reflection of your love and perfection, but we often corrupt this goodness through our ignorance.

When we insult your presence by disrespecting one another and our world, help us to see your sacred light in all things.

Teach us to give to your creation our reverence and love, and to be humble and faithful builders of your kingdom.

We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.

Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

NCEA Exams

For the first time in three years, all of our Year 11 to 13 students have had the opportunity to sit their NCEA exams in relatively normal circumstances without Covid-19 restrictions. Schools are again allowed to award extra credits learning recognition credits due to the challenges students have faced during the pandemic. These credits will appear on a students record of learning on their NZQA login

Congratulations to all the students who have started their NCEA External Exams. They have entered the exams in a good spirit. It is great to see our boys doing their best.

ADMISSION SLIPS

A reminder that students must bring their Admission Slip to every exam. If students need a new copy they can download a copy from their NZQA login. We will have a copy available for emergencies in the Careers Room if needed.

DIGITAL EXAMS

Next week we have a large number of students completing Digital Exams – in fact this has grown from one class in 2018 to over 240 students this year. Students are reminded to bring a fully charged device to the exam. Students are still able to loan a device from the school library if required.

STUDY HINTS FOR STUDENTS

(from our school diary)

At De La Salle College, every student learns good study techniques and skills. Regular homework each evening is a key to future success. This week was the start of the NCEA examination, and our junior students will start their examination shortly. Below are some ways to help get better outcomes:

ATTITUDE

  • Allocate your time for study, family, sports and friends
  • Set yourself long-term and short-term goals and work to achieve them
  • Be positive about learning. This makes study easier and more effective

ORGANISATION

  • Plan ahead, using daily and weekly timetables
  • Allocate more time to your weaker subject.
  • Keep a record of work completed and work to be done

FIND A GOOD PLACE TO STUDY

  • Try to have a room and study area where you can concentrate
  • Make frequent use of the College Library

WHEN

  • Plan a timetable that matches your commitments
  • Your study should provide time for written work, homework, assignments, daily revision, long-term and /or organisation for exams
  • Allocate more study time near exams
  • Study for 30 to 50 minute session and then take a brea
  • Keep to your programme
  • Eat healthily, sleep regularly and exercise
  • If stressed, ask for help. Your teachers want you to succeed; ask them!

HOW

  • Get yourself into a regular study routine. Use time. Do not waste it.
  • Know why you are learning and what you will study
  • Actively study. Always have a pen in hand to write brief notes and summarise
  • Write down key ideas and facts. Then say them from memory.
  • Break larger assignments down into manageable chunks so the assignments are completed in ‘doable’ stages
  • Revise constantly. We need to re-learn to prompt memory

SEE, HEAR, DO. Use all your senses to study as you will learn and remember more readily.

ASK FOR HELP WHEN NEEDED

Academic Year 7/8

Academic Principal- Mr Herbert Tanuvasa

This week the teachers met and discussed how they would incorporate Matauranga Maori into the De La Salle curriculum next year. If you are unaware, the NZ Curriculum is being refreshed so that it better honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This will be done in phases over the next 4 years, starting in 2023. The eight learning areas will remain the same with Matauranga Maori interwoven into each area. The Ministry has created strategies to achieve this with the goal of attaining excellence and equity in all areas of classroom education.

You may ask how will Matauranga Maori affect our Year 7/8 faculty next year?

In short, Matauranga Maori will enhance what is already happening in the Year 7/8 area of De La Salle College. We are already on our journey to honour both individualism and collectivism, by creating balance between the two. The key to achieving this is to hear the stories of all. Rather than a curriculum that is dependent on the story of the classroom teacher, a curriculum that allows itself to be critiqued, and everyone’s perspective heard. By understanding the individual stories of every student in the classroom, we can understand how to best move forward academically, both as a group and as individuals.

Year 7 & 8 Southwest Zone Touch Tournament

The Year 7/8 Touch team competed in the Southwest Zone tournament Boys section. They played hard and fair, winning 7 exhausting games in a row to take the title against top teams such as Koru, Viscount, and Southern Cross in the semi-final.

The final was played against Kedgley which went into overtime before the boys prevailed. The team showed good spirit in adversity and found solutions befitting the problem-solving characteristics of John Baptist de La Salle. Their next tournament will be Auckland Champs.

2022 Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Regional Prize winners

by Mr Jeremic- Head of Social Studies

Building on the success of the last three years, another De La Salle College’s YES business teams was invited to the 2022 YES South Auckland Regional Final held at the Mangere Arts Centre on 27 October.

L-R Lelei Ma Manaia CEO Alesana Bureta and Karlin McFall- marketing manager

Lelei Ma Manaia is a business formed by Alesana Bureta as the CEO, Bishop Likiliki as the Finance Manager, Karlin McFall as the Marketing Manager, Lyric Togiatomai and PJ Suapaia as the Production Managers. Their product is a Samoan Cooking Book with aim to educate people about Polynesian culture and their traditions through unique collection of recipes passed through the stories that come with recipes inside the cookbook. The cookbook was also translated into the Samoan and English language. Due to Polynesian food not being very known in the mainstream media, the boys saw an opportunity to give people a chance to learn and taste Polynesian food and traditions through their product.

The judges thought the business has a high community importance and lots of potential. As a result, the boys were awarded the Excellence in Product Development Award for 2022. By completing this project, the students also earned 9 NCEA credits and gained valuable skills and experience that is highly regarded by universities and employers. At the same event, Alesana Bureta was awarded as one of the three Young Entrepreneurs of the year for the South Region.

YEAR 10 Mentoring and coaching Program (5 weeks)

South Auckland Young Entrepreneurs (SAYE) was founded in 2019 with the purpose of empowering and enabling young adults in the South Auckland to succeed in employment and business. SAYE’s Corporate Experience programme was introduced into high schools in 2021 starting with Manurewa High and Tangaroa College. They are now excited to have launched the programme at De La Salle this month (October 2022), starting with a select group of year 10 students facilitated by Old Boy (2010) Jedi Elemani, and SAYE Founder Jerome Tairi. SAYE’s Corporate Experience aims to expose students to the corporate business world and help them realise that as young South Aucklanders, they have the skills, traits, and experiences to add value and influence to any large corporate organisation if it happens to be a path they wish to take.
