Utah Landscapes Photo Workshop Trip Report for Tom Bol Photo Workshops

We started our Utah Landscapes Workshop in Capitol Reef National Park, the perfect place for photographer's to ditch the crowds and photograph colorful rock walls and blooming orchards.

Capitol Reef is a geologic paradise. Layers of sandstone comprising the Waterpocket Fold seem to go on forever. Temperatures were colder than usual this year. We welcomed the snow capped peaks in the distance during our sunrise and sunset shoots.

Capitol Reef is an International Dark Sky Park. It is our favorite location to photograph the galactic core in the Lower 48. We had three night shoots during the workshop. In Capitol Reef we photographed the galactic core over Chimney Rock, at the Pendleton Barn and over the National Park entrance sign.

During our conference room sessions we discussed filter use and editing night sky images with masks

The desert varnish on the sandstone and the warm orange colors created captivating backgrounds for a variety of foreground subjects.

Panorama Point is a favorite shooting destination for both sunrise and sunset. From this high point, we have a view of rock layers in all 360' directions. On our final morning in the park, we used 15 stop ND filters to stretch the layers of clouds over the rocks.

Bryce National Park was breathtaking this year. It was a heavy snow year and even in mid April we had snow in our landscapes.

Sunrise Point was a big surprise this year. We had stormy, dappled light for our shoot there. Everything looked better with brooding dark clouds.

For our final evening shoot we visited Sunset Point for a night sky shoot during the Lyrid Meteor Shower. We finished the workshop the next morning at Inspiration Point with a pastel sunrise sky and a happy group headed home.

Thanks to an awesome group of photographers on our Utah Landscapes Workshop!
