ITA Rookie of the Year Award

Christine Canete from the University of Central Oklahoma has been named the 2022 ITA Rookie of the Year.

Christine Canete has been the voice of the Central Oklahoma team over the 2022 season. She has taken over the music selection at practice and on van trips, and she is always the first to start team cheers on the court. She is a bubbly outgoing personality that lifts all the girls up and her positivity rubs off on all those around her.

This spring, Canete not only wowed with her charisma but with her play as well, anchoring the #1 Doubles and #2 singles positions for the Central Oklahoma team. She has won the MIAA Freshman of the Year award for the conference, has been selected as First team MIAA in singles and doubles, and is ranked #8 nationally in Singles and #1 Nationally in Doubles.

Canete ends her freshman campaign with a 28-5 overall record in doubles as well as a 23-7 overall record in singles.

A Letter From Head Coach Joe Vann

Christine “Inah” Canete,

I am so very proud of your for being able to stand up and achieve this award for ITA Rookie of the Year!

As with every year in college, players battle through their ups and downs on the court, in the classroom, and college life. You have been able to work through them all with class, dignity, and grace. This is quite an achievement to now stand on top of the mountain and say, “I am the best”!

Your determination and drive to better yourself every day have and will continue to inspire me. Personally, as much as this is a congratulations letter, it is also a thank you letter. Thank you for being the competitor you are naturally born to be. Thank you for being our cheer captain and team voice. Thank you for being the best Team DJ we have ever had.

I know you will be successful in the future because of who you are. I am looking forward to your next 3 seasons in college. I don’t think the rest of the college world is ready once you really start to flex.

Again, the team, the University of Central Oklahoma, and myself are very proud of you and your achievements this year.

Congratulations, Joe
