Internships

An internship is any official or formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession. The most important element of internships is the integration of classroom knowledge and theory with practical application and skills. Student interns gain this experience in either professional or community settings. Internships also have the added benefit of professional recommendations, resume-worthy experience, and networking opportunities.

Why Should You Complete an Internship?

Internships can be semester long, year long or over the summer. Below are some great reasons to consider completing an internship while in college

  • Application of education and career exploration: Internships are a great way to connect classroom knowledge to real-world experience
  • Gain experience and increase marketability: Having an internship gives you experience in the career field you want to pursue.
  • Networking: Having an internship benefits you in the working environment, and it also builds your professional network.
  • Competitiveness: more than 56 percent of graduating seniors reported taking part in at least one internship
  • Professionalism: Internships can provide students with the soft skills needed in the workplace and in leadership positions
  • Build your resume: Most organizations and jobs that you apply to the following graduation want employees to have some sort of professional experience, even for entry-level jobs.
  • Job Fit: While everyone probably wants to walk away from an internship feeling excited and passionate about the experience, there’s a silver lining to be found if you didn’t enjoy the job: you’ll know what you don’t like

  2. The Jobs default page will load: on the left of the page are jobs approved by CCPS.
  3. Click on a job to load more details on-screen.
  4. Search using keywords, job titles, or employers in the upper-left search bar.
  5. Search by city, state, or zip code by clicking Location
  6. Filter your search by job duration (full-time, part-time), as well as by job type (on-campus, internship).
  7. Click on All Filters to see more filter options –– once you've added all desired search criteria, click Show Results in the lower-right corner of the filter popup.

Micro-Internships

The Micro-Internship Program allows you to connect with current students and recent grads through paid, professional projects that generally range from 5-40 hours of work and can usually be completed remotely. These projects are similar to assignments completed during a typical internship or first job, and allow students the opportunity to gain “real world” experience that they can showcase on their resume and leverage to obtain a future opportunity.

Apply for a Micro-Internship

  1. Create an account: https://info.parkerdewey.com/howard
  2. Fill out your profile as completely as possible (takes ~5 minutes)
  3. Review current Micro-Internships available
  4. Apply to projects of interest by providing customized, carefully edited responses to the application questions
  5. Be sure to check the platform regularly for new opportunities

Report Your Internship Experience

All students are REQUIRED to report their internship experiences. This will help us better track and provide meaningful opportunities to Howard students in the future.
