CANS Building Futures for Youth Award Recipients

Keegan Carver

Electrical-Construction & Industrial – Certificate, Lunenburg Campus

“This award will be very helpful to me in many different ways, the biggest help is paying for books/tuition. With this award I will not have to work as much giving me more time to focus on my studies in school and at home to excel in my program. This will make things much easier for me and hopefully will show in my work throughout the year. This award will help get me started and help pay for some of my schooling to get me where I need to be to pursue my goals. I’m very thankful that I was chosen for such a great award!”

“I chose to take the electrical construction/industrial at NSCC because of a great experience of the program at NSCC while I was visiting on a high school trip. After this experience I decided that I wanted to be a electrician which I plan to pursue in the future. I had the opportunity to be a part of Building Futures for Youth which is a great program, and after my great experience with the program and an amazing workplace that I was given for the summer, I knew that I would enjoy this career and that NSCC was the place to take my trade.”

CANS Gold Seal Award of Excellence Recipient

Sanchari De

Construction Management Technology, Ivany Campus

"This award is a huge achievement and I believe that this will take me a long way. I will work harder to achieve my academic goals and this appreciation is a boost in this process. I have decided to stay in Nova Scotia and serve the community after the completion of my program. Also, I would like to encourage women from the future generation to consider the construction industry as a career option which we do not get to see very often. I have future plans to apply for the PMP Certification and grow as an individual in the industry."

“I am an international student from India having 8 years of experience in Mechanical BIM Modelling. I realized that higher education is important and after searching a lot of colleges I found NSCC. The courses are excellent and suitable for me to grow further. In future I would like to be a Project Manager and this program is the right choice. Co-op Education and the practical work and tours that NSCC provides are very exciting and meaningful. I am very much thankful to NSCC for giving students that opportunity to go and interact with the technicians from different trades in construction. I have already completed the first year of my education and I feel proud to be a student at NSCC. I am very grateful for the award and it will encourage me to continue doing my best work. Please keep inspiring students. I look forward to visit the office some day after we pass the pandemic to thank everyone in person. I wish everyone to be safe.”

David Oulton Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Jenifer Robar

Construction Management Technology, Ivany Campus

“One of the things that has held me back from returning to school for so long is the fear of going in debt to further my education. I am so happy to have received this support, it will lessen the financial stress while I attend NSCC so that I can fully concentrate on my studies and be a successful student. Having been out of school for many years I am both nervous and excited to be returning. Receiving this award is a reminder that I am making the right decision to further my education. I am so happy I took the leap to pursue this journey and I truly appreciate the opportunity to be able to attend NSCC. I am honored to have been chosen to receive the David Oulton Memorial Award and hope I make the late Mr. Oulton and his family and friends proud. From what I have read it sounds like he would have been a great mentor and I can only hope I am fortunate enough to meet colleagues with his passion in my future.”

“Nothing puts life in perspective like a global pandemic. I have managed office operations for several years as an administrative assistant. With the lock down due to Covid-19, I spent many days at home thinking about what I want for my future. I made the difficult decision to change career paths and I am excited to start my journey of pursuing a career in the construction sector. I have always been interested in the trades but deciding on a specific trade didn't feel like the right choice for me. After researching the Construction Management Technology course at NSCC I decided it would give me the best overall combination of knowledge and skills, and could open career prospects in a variety of fields within the construction sector. I am a single mother of two and I look forward to setting an example for my daughters to always set goals and keep pushing themselves to do better.”

CANSTech Construction Innovation Scholarship Recipient

Benjamin Bouter

Drafting – Architectural, Ivany Campus

“Learning through online classes has been a challenge in my second year at NSCC. In addition to the difficulties presented by remote learning, I work a part-time job to pay for school, transport, and other student needs. Due to this award, I can to work less hours and focus more on my schoolwork, resulting in better marks and better understanding. As well, the recognition afforded me by this award is something I can point out on my resume or in an interview. Anyone can say that they are an overachiever; an award demonstrates it. In the job market, being recognized matters. It feels great that it happened so soon for me! Thank you! This award, as well as many other experiences as a student, has made me feel welcome getting into the design and construction industry.”

“My interest in a career as a designer began with a childhood love of drawing. I would often find myself doodling floor plans for fanciful houses as I sat in school. When I began looking into what paths this could lead to, I discovered the communication and problem solving aspects of technical drawing. To me, this made drafting seem a great choice of career. Knowing my field of interest, I began looking into what jobs I could do in Nova Scotia. At this point, I began talking to a friend working as a drafter. I learned a lot from him about local companies and what education I could pursue in NS. In the end, I chose NSCC for its emphasis on real-life learning and two-year program, because I'm excited to get started in the design industry!”

NSCC offers over 130 programs at 14 campuses. Together, we're transforming Nova Scotia one learner at a time.

Thank you, Construction Association of Nova Scotia, for leading the way for NSCC students.
