Ring of the Rise Southern Sierra Fly Fishers Newsletter: Second Quarter 2022

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Second Quarter Message 2022

"Yes, we are The Club that fly fishes".

In memory of Jon, we are holding the third annual Jon Hart Carpfest on May 21st

The event will be held on Lake Isabella with three divisions: Float(boat), wade and youth 16 years old and under. Trophies will be awarded to 1st and 2nd places and I am building an Epic fiberglass 8.5 ft. 6wt. for the biggest carp.

The beneficiary of this event will be “Celine’s Fly Gal Weekend.” We had 75 sign ups last year for Celine’s program and we had to scramble to get them equipped for the Sunday on the river mentoring day. Funds raised from Jon Hart Carpfest will be used purchase fly fishing outfits, waders and boots.

For the up and quickly coming Carpfest, Derek and Randy have been working very hard to get all the logistics just right so we can have a successful event. Freddie will be doing the cooking again and I hope everyone comes out, participates in the Tourney and the awards gathering. It's going to be a fun time!

MARCH 2022

PYRAMID LAKE OUTING OVERVIEW

March had us venture out of state, into Nevada, where the big (I do mean BIG) and mean Lahontan Cutthroat Trout resides.

Many members caught their P.B. (personal best) on this outing. We have two pending IGFA world records by of our Board member, Kesley Gallagher. Read about it in the following pages of our Newsletter.

APRIL 2022

THE SWAN FLY FISHING CHALLENGE

April had a very fun and unique outing. E. Clapton and G. Harrison co-wrote a song which has the line: “I told you ‘bout the swans, that they live in the park.”

April had us riding the swan boats at Echo Park Lake, just a few miles from downtown LA. Everyone had a blast fishing from the Swan paddle boats and the birthday girl, Analiza had the hot fly rod that day catching bass and trout. Lino Jubilado headed this outing and we all had lunch afterwards at nearby Bahay Kubo Restaurant, which Lino calls the Pilipino Panda Express.

Kids’ Fly Fishing Academy is coming!

KERNVILLE, CA | JUNE 11, 2022

The Southern Sierra Fly Fishers (SSFF-CLUB) are big believers in promoting the sport of fly fishing to a broader demographic. What better way to promote the sport than starting with our youth?

We have created a fun and interactive program for children to enjoy the sport of fly fishing. The students learn the mechanics of fly casting, understanding the importance of entomology, the art of fly tying, the value of knot tying, the significance of conservation in the fly fishing world and ultimately the joy of fishing for trout. We have partnered with Kern River Fly Shop to make this program possible.

Included is a very important session on water safety and on the stream etiquette.

A relative must be a club member for students to participate in this free event and the student must not be more than 18 years of age.

If you would like to enroll your child or become a mentor during this class, please contact Chiaki Harami for further details.

OUR VISION

The Southern Sierra Fly Fishers Club was created in 2004 by a group of local anglers interested in promoting the art fly fishing.

We have since grown into a multifaceted organization providing resources for education, conservation, mentorship and promoting the sport of fly fishing to a broader and more diverse audience. Our group consists of members ranging from expert to beginner anglers each sharing a passion for fly fishing and furthering their knowledge of the sport by learning from each other.

We are excited to announce upcoming programs and events such as the California Fly Fishing Open that benefits "Casting for Recovery" and the "Kern Valley Search and Rescue".

We hope you can join us in our endeavors to enhance the fly fishing community in the Southern Sierras and beyond.
