Topic
Geography
Our topic this half term was called ‘world of water’
Our hook was our visit to the deep
We looked at the different animals that live in the 5 oceans.
We discussed ways in which we can care for our oceans.
In class we looked at how to use an atlas. We were able to find the 7 continents and 5 oceans.
We looked at the physical and human geography features.
Applying our knowledge and skills in our final geography piece.
Literacy
Our visit to the deep also fed into our first literacy unit. We explored the features of a recount. We identified that it is written in past tense and first person. We gathered nouns and adjectives to use in our writing and looked at conjunctions to extend our sentences. We used time openers to give our recount structure.
This half term we have paid particular attention to our handwriting and letter formation to ensure our work is neat and so it can be read by ourselves and others.
Our second literacy text was Tiddler (the story telling fish of the ocean) by one of our favourite authors, Julia Donaldson. The outcome was to write a letter about how disappointed Tidder was that nobody believed his amazing adventures.
We explored the features of a letter and gathered some ambitious vocabulary. We looked at different punctuation and we practiced editing and improving our writing.
Maths
We revisited addition and subtraction. We used number squares to help understand place value and to strengthen their grasp on numbers and the number system. Some of us were able to add and subtract using the column method including bridging and exchanging.
We then revisited multiplication including repeated addition and arrays.
We looked at division and sharing amounts equally between groups.
We became more confident at recognising and naming 2D and 3D shapes and describing their properties. We were able to identify the 2D shapes on the surface of 3D shapes and we enjoyed exploring the lines of symmetry on 2D shapes.
Finally we revisited time.
In addition to O’clock and half past, we told the time in 5 minute intervals.
We have loved increasing our maths understanding, recall and fluency with Numbots.
Science
Animals including humans
We have continued to explore animals including humans this half term. We have looked at the offspring of different animals and identified animals that lay eggs. We then worked scientifically to find out how exercise affects our bodies.
RE
Special times
Our key question in RE this half term has been ‘Why are some times special?’
We have talked about different religious festivals and celebrations including weddings, Christmas, Easter, Hanukkah and Ramadan.
We made Jewish bread called Challah.
Computing
Creating media
This term we have been creating media. Children have used a keyboard to write and delete text. They have changed the appearance of text making changes to the font.
PE
Gymnastics
This half term we have enjoyed learning gymnastics.
Children created a sequence using the techniques they have learnt such as balance jumps and rolls.
RSHE
Our focus this half term has been relationships. We have looked at our families and friends and why these are so important. We know that not all families are the same but at the heart of all families is love.
We discussed the qualities of a good friend and have talked about loneliness and what we can do if we feel this way.
We understand that we are unique and that this is what makes us special. We enjoyed singing ‘it’s good to me me’.
Celebrating Attendance
Well done to the attendance winners.
