Leading Domain and 5 elements

Like all NSW Public Schools, Turramurra North PS developed the 5P Plan in Semester One 2014.

Again, like all NSW Public Schools the TNPS 2015-2017 School Plan has three strategic directions.

Learning, Teaching and Leading

1. Literate, numerate, creative, collaborative and confident learners

Focus areas for improvement / growth (learners learning):

- improved student writing performance; turn around evidenced decline 2011-2014

- development of independent, collaborative / creative / confident learners, problem solvers and critical thinkers (21st C learners)

- focus on feedback / student self-assessment with:

goal setting (learning targets)
student critique (models of excellence/criteria)
student led conferences &
public exhibition of work (authentic audience)

2. Inspired teachers transforming learning

Focus areas for improvement / growth (teachers teaching):

- improved instruction of writing via '7 steps to writing success' - Jen McVeity

- shift in pedagogical base to student centred learning/classrooms via TPACK / SAMR action learning - Dr Kristy Goodwin

- alignment of pedagogy and learning spaces/learning space design - Emma Marshall

3. A vibrant, progressive and inclusive school community

Focus areas for improvement / growth (leading the learning community):

- improved reporting / visibility of student learning progress to / for the community

- improved engagement of the community in learning / growth of school

- improved communication between the school and the home

- developing community vision of the future of work and the connection to changes at school

Schools report progress annually in the Annual School Report (ASR). The School Excellence Framework (SEF) is used as a basis for this process. Schools reflect on their performance against SEF as ...

The SEF Domains of Learning, Teaching and Leading each have 4 or 5 'elements' (total 14)

The SEF 'Learning Domain' has 5 SEF 'elements' - learning culture, wellbeing, curriculum and learning, assessment and reporting and student performance measures.

The SEF 'Teaching Domain' has 5 SEF 'elements' - effective classroom practice, data skills and use, collaborative practice, learning and development and professional standards.

The SEF 'Leading Domain' has 4 SEF 'elements' - leadership, school planning implementation and reporting, school resources and management practices and processes.

Moving forward, all schools will participate in ...

'..school validation.'

The school will be required to provide evidence to support progress reported in the ASR.

Validation will always occur in Semester Two of each school year for nominated schools only.

It is the case that LMBR round one schools were 'validated' in 2016.

Validation Teams consist of:

- 1 x Principal School L.Ship

- 1 x Principal

TNPS has been nominated for 2017 (Semester Two) validation.

We have chosen to be organised ahead of time.

Evidence can only be included from the 12 months prior to the validation.

Organising and locating the right evidence is a big job.

Schools have been advised to organise evidence for VALIDATION in 'evidence sets.'

Through our work over the past couple of terms, the TNPS Executive have developed a deep understanding of SEF. We will now will work with staff to capture evidence 'as we go'.

Each evidence set contains 3 to 4 artefacts which demonstrate elements across the three domains of the SEF.

The TNPS Executive have decided to arrange TNPS evidence across 7 Evidence Sets. These include:

1. Writing

2.Future Focussed Learning

3. Wellbeing

4. Connections

5. Systems

6. Staff Capacity

7. Culture

To summarise ... SEF Validation is a little like a student led conference with parents.

Instead of the student evidencing their growth to their parents (work produced) the school evidences growth to the Department of Education.

Here is the school's chance to evidence what has been reported.

The theme is making the growth/excellence visible. It is the proof.

We believe this cross-reference helps demonstrate how our evidence at TNPS addresses the SEF Elements across the three SEF Domains.

While we want to be well prepared for any future validation at TNPS,

we also are looking to build on our good work together as we evaluate ahead of the next planning cycle for the 2018-2020 school plan.

Successful evaluation and validation of progress will help TNPS continue to grow and improve as we prepare our children for what will be a very different (2030) world.
