Sentence Fluency Workshop An Activity that Focuses on Readability and Sentence Variation

How to Start

  1. Select any paragraph from your essay
  2. Number a blank piece of paper from 1-5
  3. In the first five sentences, count how many words are in each sentence
  4. On your numbered page, write down the number of words per sentence
  5. Next, write out the first five to seven words in each sentence next to the number of words

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Compare the number of words in each sentence.
  • Are they close to the same number or do they vary?

Keep Analyzing

  • How do your sentences start?
  • Do they all start the same way?
  • Look for ways to vary how each sentence starts.

This activity will help with the readability of your paper. Once you've located the areas that need improvement, it's time to edit!

Time to Edit

Why do writers pay attention to sentence fluency?
