Alternate-leaf dogwood
Native to eastern North America
Propagated by birds
Not affected by the black knot fungus (Apiosporina morbosa) that killed many of our black cherry (Prunus serotina) and choke cherry trees (Prunus virginiana)
Found a few infected with golden canker
So far, cutting off the infected branches appears to keep it from spreading.
I took the photo to confirm identification. Then went back to searching for wild apple trees.
Did not notice the wasps (Euodynerus megaera) resting on leaves until I started editing the photo. This species, with no common name, have a very painful sting.
I replaced the blurry ant on the flowers with a clear one.
Removed the background for a clearer view of the leaves.
Used Photoshop and Corel Painter.
