Class 11 Spring 2

In LIRA this half term, we have enjoyed reading extracts from a variety of non-fiction texts, such as 'Animal Management', 'Guide Dogs', 'The Humble Potato', 'The Octopus' and 'California's Unlikely Warriors'.

We've discussed ways to locate and extract relevant information from the text and enjoyed writing our own 'SATs-Style' questions.

For our literacy unit, we started our work on a newspaper article to reporting the details of an intriguing crime scene we had to investigate.

We used skills such as direct and indirect speech, emotive language and cohesive devices to create a gripping yet informative news article.

We thought carefully about how we could represent both informality and formality through the different quotes provided by witnesses.

Check out our final pieces of writing.

In maths this half term, we have learnt a variety of skills...

This half term, our focus area for topic has been Art. During this topic, we explored the styles of Mark Rothko and Jean-Mitchel Basqiaut.

In our lessons, we have experimented with different skills and painting styles of the two artists. We have learnt all about the way colours can be used to depict emotion and the skills to adapt tone through tinting and shading.

Our final outcomes will be a blend of Rothko's and Basquiat's techniques - and will be on display in our school art gallery when we return from the Easter holidays.

In science this term we looked at Light.

During this unit, we learnt all about artificial and natural light sources, how light travels in straight lines and leads to the creation of shadows. We also learnt about the angles of incidence and reflection, as well as the refraction of light and the composition of white light when split by a prism.

We also participated in National Science Week.

The theme was connections. There was a whole school challenge to create the bridge that could hold the greatest mass.

This made us carefully consider the strength that could be provided by applying different shapes and supports.

During hockey, we learnt how to successfully pass, dribble and shoot and then apply them to a game situation.

There were some excellent choices of favourite book characters for ‘World Book Day’. We participatedin a quiz and shared the reasons and details behind our choice of character.

Thank you to Sean Gaffney for joining our school and putting us all through our paces with a very active workout. As well as sharing your story and how you became an Invictus Games and Commonwealth Games competitor.

Well done to everyone who entered the Easter Egg competion - there were some egg-cellent enteries!

Congratulations to our first and second place winners... Jacob and Freya!

Here are some of the things we will be learning next half-term...

Have a wonderful Easter everyone!
