WORKING BEE After a lengthy hiatus, our termly working bees recommence with a planned working bee to take place this Saturday, March 19 from 9am. The focus will largely be on readying the tennis court area in the north west corner of the school to eventually relocate our vegie patch ( due to the 2022-2023 building works). In addition, there are plenty of other works to complete, including the spreading of mulch and general tidying and sweeping. Hopefully you and your family can find an hour or two to help this Saturday morning.

BADGE PRESENTATIONS House Captains badges will be presented this Friday afternoon at 2pm, at a special Grade 3 to 6 assembly on the Tiger Turf. Parents of recipients are cordially invited to attend. Badges will be presented by Richmond AFLW player, Gabby Seymour.

Final badge presentations to Japanese, Sustainability and Arts Captains will be made at assembly on Monday, March 28.

SPORTING NEWS It has been a busy sporting calendar in Term 1, with swimming and athletics dominating. Last Friday’s Athletics carnival reportedly went very well, and it was great that we could finally free the shackles of Covid and take part in the day’s activities. The carnival serves as the selection trials for the District event to be held on Friday, April 1. And, as reported last week, we have representatives swimming at the Regional swimming carnival on March 22 – results will be published in next week’s newsletter.

PUPIL FREE DAY We held a successful pupil free day on Tuesday, March 15, focussing on two school wide initiatives for 2022. The morning looked at Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) with a school team delivering professional development for their peers. PLCs are an approach to school improvement in which groups of teachers work collaboratively at the school level to improve student outcomes. Key to the success of this work is the capacity for these practices to build collective efficacy (effect size of 1.57) and shift teacher mindsets, i.e. teachers believe that they are responsible for the success of every student in their school and, more importantly, that they are capable, collectively, to progress the learning of all students regardless of their background.

In the afternoon we then spent time enhancing our knowledge of the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support system, which has been mentioned frequently in previous newsletters this year. My sincere thanks and congratulations to the staff members who ran the sessions – we are very fortunate to have such leadership skills from within, with passion and commitment to match.

REMAINING PUPIL FREE DAYS FOR 2022 School Council recently approved and endorsed the final two pupil free days for 2022, so please pen these into calendars asap! The next pupil free day will be held on Wednesday, July 13 to enable the conduct of three way conferences throughout that day and into early evening. The final pupil free day for 2022 will be on Monday, October 31 (the day before Cup day), which has been tagged as a report writing day for staff.

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY Grade 6 Team Leader, Sharon Groves and myself will be privileged to attend the National Young Leaders day at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre next Wednesday, March 23. Each year, all of our Grade 6 elected school leaders attend the day to hear the leadership stories of prominent Australians and to take away key learnings to enhance their own leadership at our school. This year’s speakers include swimmer Cate Campbell, Test Cricketer Damien Fleming, Pilot Lachie Smart, the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world and Emmy award winning writers, actors and directors Guy Edmonds and Matt Zeremes. It promises to be a valuable day, with recounts written by the students to feature prominently in next week’s newsletter.

I hope you can make Saturday’s working bee, and it will be nice to also see footy back in Melbourne this weekend. Wherever your weekend takes you, I hope it is enjoyable.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

Principal

EDUCATION SUB-COMMITTEE School Council sub-committees are open to non-school council members, allowing members of the school community to have an opportunity to be involved in school planning and council matters. The Education sub-committee meets once a term and consists of a small group of staff and parents, working together to develop and review policies for the benefit of the school community. The committee is for people interested in developing policies in line with Department guidelines and the community’s educational aspirations for its children. Policies are statements of purpose, which are implemented on Council’s behalf to achieve many of the objectives stated in our School Strategic Plan as well as areas, which need to be addressed to ensure our programs and practices are followed in accordance with the needs of the community in mind. Consultation is sought from various branches of the school community according to the purposes of the policy.

The Term 1 meeting of the 2022 Education sub-committee will be held on Tuesday, 29th March at 6.30pm in the school staffroom.

At the first meeting we will look at the Department Policy Template Portal which provides the templates for all our policies and begin the review of several policies.

If you are interested in attending, please email me: gillian.nicholls@education.vic.gov.au

We are extremely excited to be able to share PROJECT+ with you!

PROJECT+ has been developed to ensure The Resilience Project continues to support the wellbeing of students and the wider school community. Twice a term, they will be sending out PROJECT+ (a bit like a traditional Newsletter) with a whole range of additional ideas, activities and resources that can be used by the whole school community.

The first edition of PROJECT+ can be accessed here - Making Connections and Supporting Your Children

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you have a valid means-tested concession card, such as a Veterans Affairs Gold Card, Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible. There is also a special consideration category for asylum seeker and refugee families.

Payment amounts this year are $125 for eligible primary school students. Payments are made direct to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions and sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

It is important that funding made available in 2022 supports students to participate in school trips, camps and sporting activities this year rather than being held for future years. This funding can also be used in conjunction with any funding accrued from previous years. Please note these activities will only take place if they meet COVIDSafe requirements.

If you applied for CSEF through our school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year, unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.

If you would like to apply for the first time, please complete the attached application form and return to the office with a copy of your card.

You can also find out more about the program and eligibility, on the Department of Education and Training’s Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund web page.

Check with the school office if you are unsure, and please return completed forms to the school office as soon as possible.
