Summer Newsletter 2022 Dŵr Y Felin Comprehensive School

Message from the Headteacher

Welcome to our Summer Newsletter, what a term it has been! The pupils have been very busy giving of their best in all aspects of school life. I hope this Newsletter will give you a snapshot of some of the many experiences the pupils have had both inside and outside the classroom.

We are pleased that we have been able to re-introduce many whole school and extra-curricular events to the calendar this term. Pupils have had the opportunity to go on school trips once again – something we all took for granted previously.

Year 11 have had experienced the reintroduction of external examinations. They showed great resilience and determination to do their best all subjects and celebrated the end of the examinations and their time in formal education with an assembly, customary shirt signing and a Prom. We wish them well in their next adventures.

Whatever we do at Dŵr y Felin, we continue to strive to provide the best learning experiences for all our pupils and create an environment that allows our students to thrive.

Please accept my warm wishes for a healthy and relaxing summer.

Dwr y Felin Class of 2022
On 7th July, we held our leavers' assembly and leavers celebration for the year 11 pupils. During the assembly we looked back over the pupils' time at Dwr-Y-Felin and celebrated their hard work and many successes. It was a pleasure to see so many people at school enjoying the sunshine, chatting and having photos before the pupils made their way to The Towers hotel to dance the night away. The pupils' behaviour was exemplary throughout the day and they were a credit to our school. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with year 11 and wish them all the very best for their future adventures, whether they continue into further education or employment. Congratulations year 11!
Summer Concert
It was wonderful to hold a Summer Concert this year in St David’s Church. This was the first live concert since December 2019. For some pupils it was their first time performing in the church. It was a delight to see the pupils performing with confidence and enthusiasm. Some highlights include: Woodwind Ensemble – We’ll Meet Again, Wind Band – One Moment in Time, Orchestra – Pirates of the Carribbean. Massed Orchestra & Choir – This Is Me, the Staff & School Choir – When You Believe, and the Choir finale - ABBA Medley. A huge thank you to Cerdd NPT Staff - Mrs Heidi Davies, Mr Paul Bewen Chappell and Miss Sharon Williams - for all their effort with the pupils this year. We are looking forward to planning the next concert. Miss O. Martin
Lead Prefects 2022
I am delighted to announce that Bethan Carroll and Tommy Morgan are the Lead Prefects for 2022-23. Congratulations to the Senior Prefect Team.

Oxford Trip

An account from students

"We were greeted by a politics, philosophy and economic tutor from the bus at Jesus College in Oxford. Matthew, the Oxford Tutor, welcomed us to Oxford and showed us around the historical features of the campus whilst teaching us about the history of Jesus College. Matthew was engaging for all pupils and we thoroughly enjoyed the Q&A about life in Oxford University and what is offered. We received an extraordinary opportunity to talk to a pupil who is currently studying German and History in Oxford. This enabled us to understand what life is like in Oxford University from a pupils point of view which helped us gain a better understanding of what could be offered to us in our future. We were offered a variety of sandwiches for lunch which we enjoyed in the historical Dining Hall at Jesus College whilst we were provided with a talk of inspirational alumni. After lunch we experienced a tour of Oxford which was very informative and gave us more inspiration. The tour of Oxford enabled us to view the University, the beautiful structures, and the meanings behind them all. We were given a sample lecture about a topic of our choice. We chose language which helped us to gain a better understanding of what lectures would be like in University. As part of this, we were taught about how language was created and how it is viewed by different people. In groups, were able to discuss questions used in previous Oxford interviews which gave us fantastic opportunities to experience what we might encounter in an interview for a prestigious university such as Oxford. We all thoroughly enjoyed this experience and gained lots of knowledge to help guide us and explore our options for the future. We hope that Mr Rayson and us as pupils will be given more opportunities of this stature."

Over 40 pupils attended the Afan Nedd Tawe Schools Athletics championships on a very hot Thursday! Young Writers’ Competition 2022

Our year 7 and 8 pupils entered this year’s creative writing competition. The theme was Twisted Tales and pupils were encouraged to take a traditional tale and write it from a new perspective, with a twist, or a back story. We had some fantastic ideas and entries, from the pupils. In fact, 18 pupils from across the two year groups were successful in getting their stories published. A huge well done to them, and we are very proud of their achievements. Writing is a wonderful way of expressing yourself and it is a pleasure to see how imaginative and creative our pupils are.

Dwr y Felin witness two historic Welsh victories!

On March 24th, a number of our pupils boarded a coach once again set for Cardiff to support our national football team in the next stage in their World Cup qualification against Austria. The atmosphere was electric! We were in prime position to view Gareth Bale take a free kick and waited with bated breath! He scored and the stadium erupted. It was tense when we went into extra time but Wales won 2 – 1. A historic victory and we were there!

Finally, on the 5th June we returned to Cardiff for the last qualification match against Ukraine, hoping to witness yet another historic victory. We weren’t disappointed. Yet another Gareth Bale free kick resulted in a 1 – 0 victory over a very impressive Ukrainian side. Wales have qualified for the World Cup and DYF were there to witness it! We continue to be proud members of the Red Wall – y Wal Goch! Cymru am byth!

Modern Foreign Languages Poetry Competition Achievement

Kate Ewens and Rebecca Rubin (Year 9) entered the Mother Tongue, Other Tongue Poetry Competition through Routes into Languages. Pupils from across Wales entered the competition and we are pleased to say that they won the competition for their age group.

Their work has been published on the website as an example of good work. https://routesintolanguagescymru.co.uk/gallery/

Supporting Ukraine

Year 11 prefects organised the donations to help support the people affected by the crisis in the Ukraine. We were overwhelmed by the donations given from staff, pupils, and the local community. Thanks to all, including Tesco, Waunceirch, who also supported the cause.

Toiletries, hats, scarves and colouring books to name a few were donated!
As part of our school day supporting the victims of war, KS3 pupils created artwork showing their support and solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Comic Relief

Thank you to everyone who donated money for Comic Relief! In total we raised £3,000 which is amazing! £1000 was donated for the no school uniform and over £2000 was raised from the sales and activities. A big thank you to all the prefects and teachers who helped make the day possible. Well done to everyone who got involved and participated - we hope you had fun! Special mention to Elliott Collins who won the 'Keepy Uppy Challenge' with an incredible 825!

Outdoor activities, giant chess and homemade badges for Ukraine donations.

DofE

This year we took 44 pupils out on our first DofE Bronze residential expedition post-pandemic. The pupils completed the expedition in the Gower and have been volunteering in the community as part of the qualification. Well done Year 10!

Menter Iaith

When the pupils returned after the Easter holidays, Blwyddyn 9 had the opportunity to have some sessions with Menter Iaith. Pupils discussed the advantages of learning Welsh and how the skills involved in learning a language can be taken into the world of work. The pupils were able to see the advantages of dysgu Cymraeg , play some games and do some quizzes during these sessions.
