Hoylandswaine Primary School May Newsletter

Introduction

Welcome back and I hope all our families have had a fantastic Easter break! Wow how are we already at the start of the summer term! We’ve had a great start to the term so far. Pupils have returned from the break with positive attitudes to learning and have been pushing themselves to do their best. School has been a hive of exciting opportunities leading up to this term and I know both staff and children have been embracing it! Even though this half term will be short and sweet, we have ample opportunities for our incredible children to showcase their learning through our Jubilee Arts Week Celebration, Y5/6 Residential and KS1 & KS2 SATs weeks.

As always, please do come in and speak to us and use our meet & greet opportunities on a morning to keep us informed. If you don't follow us on Twitter already, remember that you can keep up with updates of the school using @HoylandswainePS

Curriculum Topics

As we enter Summer Term 1, all our classes will be starting new curriculum topics. Each topic will last for a half term and will use one 'key subject' driver to deliver the curriculum content based around the topic for context. Each topic will have an engaging hook for children to introduce their learning and a high-quality, purposeful end outcome that they will work towards in order to apply their learning in a real-life scenario.

Find out the topic your child will be doing below so that you can ask them all about what they are doing in school.

#AttendanceMatters

At Hoylandswaine Primary School, we fully recognise the impact of good attendance and punctuality on the success and development of young people both socially and academically.

Research has proved that any student with attendance under 95% is at risk of achieving a grade lower in every subject by the time they leave school. We expect all students to attend school regularly and our whole school attendance attendance target is 97%. We have introduced the 100 Club as an outstanding target for classes to meet each week.

SATs

As I'm sure you're aware, children in Y2 and Y6 will be completing their KS1 and KS2 assessments during the months of May. These are a great opportunity for children to demonstrate and celebrate their learning across their journey at Hoylandswaine Primary School and we are excited to support them to achieve their potential. The children have worked incredibly hard and it has been amazing to see their progress first-hand. They are full prepared and I couldn't be more confident that the children will do their absolute best on the days!

Click the buttons below for more information about the assessments

Y6 SATs Breakfast Club

To help the children start the day in a positive way and allow them to speak to a friend or adult to provide support and encouragement as we tackle the assessments together, we will be providing the Y6 children with a free breakfast club from Monday 9th May to Thursday 12th May. This will run in the hall from 8:00am.

The children will be provided with breakfast which will have a variety of cereal and toast options, a drink and the chance to socialise with their friends and teachers.

It would be great to get all children to attend these sessions!

Jubilee Celebration

On the week commencing 16th May, we will be hosting an Arts Week across school with a theme of 'Great Britian & The Platinum Jubilee'

On Thursday 26th May, we will be hosting a Jubilee Celebration Gallery for all parents to attend where we will showcase the children's work as well as other Jubilee-themed celebration events.

We will start the celebration from 2:30pm, where you can collect your child so that they are able to show you around and discuss their work.

We will keep the gallery and events open after school so that as many people can attend as possible! Hopefully, we can get some local press to attend too - fingers crossed.

TTRS: HCAT Cross-Trust Competition

As part of our commitment to make maths exciting and high profile in our school and as an adopted member of the HCAT school community, we are taking part in a friendly competition involving all 7 HCAT primary schools on Friday 20th May.

In the spirit of the competition, we once again are asking children to come in their bandanas, ripped jeans and sparkles as they become Rock Stars for the day!

All game modes (Gig, Garage, Studio, etc.) will count but only from games played and there will be prizes awarded for the highest scoring classes, children and school who are participating! There may even be the opportunity to win personalised t-shirts for the lucky winners!

Let's show them all what Hoylandswaine can do - we can win this!

Walk to School Week

Are your pupils ready to #PowerUp? This year’s challenge, #PowerUp, will engage pupils through video game-inspired design, encouraging them to travel sustainably to school every day of the week.

Each day will see a level unlocked and a new mission to complete, through which pupils will discover the incredible benefits of walking for individuals, communities and the planet.

ARE WE READY TO:

  • TEAM UP?
  • DEFEAT DANGER?
  • BOOST HEALTH?
  • SAVE THE PLANET?
  • LEAD THE WAY?

School Council - MP Visit

We are excited to announce that our next school council meeting will be hosted by the Member of Parliament for Penistone and Stockbridge - Miriam Cates.

She will be visiting the school to talk to children about her role within politics and some of the responsibilities she has representing the constituency. Following on from this, she will be chairing the school council meeting for May and inspiring our budding councillors to achieve great things!

Railway Safety Assembly

We thought it would be pivotal to make you aware that there have been an increase in recent reports to British Transport Police of various incidents around the Penistone viaduct area by some young people. As a result, we will be welcoming Rowena Chantler from the Penistone Line Partnership to host a whole school assembly for children on Monday 9th May on Railway Safety.

Barnsley Music Services

Barnsley Music Service peripatetic music lessons are currently open for children to register an interest in participating. At school, we currently have peripatetic teachers for woodwind, keyboards and guitar/ukulele who visit school weekly. If your child is interested in participating, enquiries should be directed to the school office.

Penistone 4 Sports - Upcoming Competitions

Extra-Curricular Clubs

Extra-curricular clubs will commence next week (with the exception of Monday due to Bank Holiday), places have been allocated and it would be appreciated if parents make their payments using Arbor before the commencement of the club. We are aware that there are some teething issues Arbor logins onto child’s Arbor account, but we will be addressing this next week.

HSWP - Complaints Policy

As is good practice, we wanted to take this opportunity to share with parents own complaints policy and procedure. Under Section 29(1)(b) of the Education Act 2002, all maintained schools must publicise our complaints procedures online. Our aim as a school is to work in partnership with parents, carers and the wider community as we endeavour to do our best for all our students. Please feel free to familiarise yourself with the policy using the link below.
