Italy's Most Colorful City
By Jazmin Brown
Our day began with a three hour bus ride to Naples (aka Napoli). The drive was enjoyable because of all the amazing scenery along the way. We saw beautiful mountains, buildings, and country side.
When we reached Naples, we drove past the docking area for cruise ships and the beautiful body of water. Once off the bus, we had free time for lunch and to explore the shops and restaurants along the water. We all had a variety of foods that all looked amazing. From pasta, to pizza, the food was great. We all enjoyed our lunches.
Next, we began our tour of the beautiful city of Naples. Our wonderful tour guide, Teresa, first took us to La Galleria Del Tempo and the town square where we learned about the variety of Kings that have ruled throughout the centuries. The statues of these Kings were really cool to see. Teresa explained to us that Napoleon people have their own language that’s different from Italian. She said that their language is a mix of French and Spanish. I thought that was really cool to be able to hear her speak with so many nice people we walked past.
After, Teresa took us to an authentic pizza margherita restaurant where she talked to us about how pizza is made in Naples. She explained how pizza margherita were invented in the 19th century and has been a favorite food of Napoleon people ever since. She said her favorite is the fried pizza and even took us to a family owned restaurant that’s been passed down through generations and ran by 21 daughters and sons.
Next, we explored the Spanish District, which used to be a military district in the 19th century. However, now it’s the most populated area in Naples. Walking through this district, the streets were very small and narrow, yet there were always a ton of people hanging out, taking a walk, or even eating at restaurants. She explained how these streets are kind of like a huge living room for everyone to mingle and catch up. I thought that was really cool. The people were so friendly.
Lastly, we walked past a castle that was made with two kinds of volcanic ash. It was impressive to see how they built their buildings and why the castle remains standing until this very day. They have even used the volcanic ash to make their roads which never seems to have any pot holes like in the U.S. Overall, learning about this process was a great learning experience.
After our tour we drove an hour to our hotel, which is so amazing and has a beautiful view that overlooks the ocean and mountains. We all were very excited about this. After we had some down time to check in, we got ready for our team dinner! The restaurant was incredible and to our surprise brought out a variety of food over four courses. From bread, to pasta, pizza, to salad, and even brats with fries. We all left very full, I can promise you that. It was so nice to be able to spend time with each other, laugh, talk, and eat amazing food. Our night consisted of even more team bonding as we had time to explore the areas surrounding our hotel. We had so much fun!
