March Newsletter 2023 SHIRELAND TECHNOLOGY PRIMARY

Principal's Introduction

Dear families,

Despite the brevity of the half term, we have been able to do so much again as a school.

Achievements to highlight is the National Attendance Award for the Autumn Term from Fischer Family Trust, where we were in the top 25% of all schools. We were also awarded, for the second year, the National Music Mark Award, which recognises excellence and a proactive and dynamic approach to providing exceptional music education.

I was also immensely proud to see two of our Key Stage two pupils stand up and highlight two causes that were personal to them and engaged the school community to support them in their fundraising efforts. Not only did it demonstrate strong leadership skills, but showed they cared about others and did something about it. Between them they raised just under £1,000, showing again just what a caring, generous and special community our school is.

The Summer term, brings National testing in Years 4, 2 and 1, where we see how well our children have done in comparison to others. Good luck to all those taking Phonics Tests, SATs and Multiplications Tests next term.

Finally, we are always looking at how we continue to improve our school and so we look forward to returning in April to brand new Astro turf in the three playgrounds. Generously fully funded by the Trust. It means we will have much improved areas for children to play out on in all seasons. We hope they will be completed quickly and we will let you know if there are any issues with drop off and collection points.

Wishing you a very Happy Easter, a blessed Ramadan and looking forward to seeing all of your wonderful experiences in your Cultural Journey booklets and Class Dojo Portfolios.

Lady Grundy

Nursery

Theme:- Looking through my Window

The first part of the half-term was spent learning about rainbows and what causes a rainbow. The children have learnt that a rainbow appears in the sky when it is raining and sunny at the same time. We explored the colours of a rainbow and created collage pictures and paintings. Nursery also learnt the words and actions to the song, ‘I can see a Rainbow’. We read the story of ‘Elmer and the Rainbow’ by David McKee, which was about a multi-coloured elephant that wanted to share its colours.

Recently, we have been learning about plants. The children have enjoyed exploring the class role-play area, which was set up as a garden centre. The children have also planted cress seeds and have watched them sprout and grow. We recorded how the cress changed in our ‘Cress Diary.’

Mother’s Day Delight in Nursery

Our ‘Mother’s Day Delight’ was the highlight this term. The children in Nursery performed to their mother’s and carers. The children sang songs to a happy audience. They also shared a special message and presented mum’s and carers with a hand-made card and flowers. Well done, Nursery!

Reception

Theme:-Food Glorious Food

This term we have been learning all about life on a farm. We have spent time learning all the different animals that live on a farm and the role of a farmer. The children have discovered a range of food and sorted them into groups of healthy and not heathy foods whilst learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We enjoyed reading the traditional tale of Jack and the Beanstalk and then planting our own beanstalks. We learnt that plants needed soil, water and light to grow, and we have been measuring to see how tall our own beanstalks will grow. The children have enjoyed a wide variety of activities in the creative and STEM room. They particularly loved having a go at milking a cow and learning where milk comes from.

Mother’s Day Delight in Reception

What an amazing Mother's Day Delight assembly we had. A wonderful turnout with lots of happy, smiling parents watching their children sing, perform poems, speak and show off their Mother's Day cards. We were so proud of all the children who performed, and I think we could all agree that parents and teachers left with a tear in their eyes and a lump in their throat. Well done, Reception!

Year One

Theme:- Amazing Animals

This half-term, we have learnt some incredible facts about animals and their habitats. We learnt what a habitat is and how animals adapt to their environment for example the desert, the jungle and urban areas. We also learnt about different continents and where different animals come from. In Art we created an under the sea collage using different materials and we learnt the cross-hatching skill to sketch an image of a nocturnal animal.

In Maths, we have been learning about capacity and volume. Children used their problem-solving skills to solve a capacity problem for the Tiger Who Came to Tea.

Year 2

Theme:- Creepy Crawlies

This half term, we have been learning all about the weird and wonderful world of ‘Creepy Crawlies!’ To ‘excite’ our learning, we visited Victoria Park to carry out a minibeast hunt. We found lots of bugs, including worms, ladybirds, spiders and slugs! Back in the classroom, we learnt about different habitats and microhabitats that creepy crawlies live in around the world; the difference between living and non-living things and food chains.

The children also really enjoyed designing and building their own Bug Hotels. Look out for them in our playground, providing a home for the different minibeasts that live in our school grounds!

In writing lessons, our children have been busy writing their own adventure stories based on ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson. There are some fantastic ‘Super Spider’ and ‘Super Butterfly’ stories that include some wonderful setting and character descriptions! Well done Year 2!

Year 3

Theme:- Planet SOS

This half term, we have been exploring our planet and the small changes we can make in our own lives to protect our precious Planet, Earth. We have been reading the book Planet SOS by Marie G Rhode. All the threats to the natural beauty and wildlife on Earth are outlined in the book, and pupils have enjoyed researching ways in which they can help reduce the carbon footprint humans are leaving.

We had a fantastic visit from the Eco Bus where we learned all about how we can Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. We spent time thinking about our waste in Sandwell and how we can separate it carefully to reduce what we throw away. We learned that small changes to the way we organise our waste can make a huge difference!

We also produced our own Artwork to show the beauty and value of where we live, and where we go to school. We took inspiration from famous artists like Van Gogh and applied their ideas and skills to our own work.

Here is some of the inspiring artwork we completed. Can you see how the ‘Smogasaurus Monster’ is overtaking our beautiful skyscape at STP?

Can you guess which Van Gogh painting we took inspiration from?

Year 4

Theme:- Mountain High River Low

This half term, we have been learning about how mountains are formed, their impact on the physical and human geography of a place, and the location of them in the UK and across the world. We kick started our theme with our ‘passports’ where we explored key mountains around the world. We then moved on to look at the water cycle and the importance of mountains and rivers in it. We also painted our very own mountain picture, using watercolour paints. We spent time using watercolour paints in a variety of different ways and used different sized brushes and brush strokes.

World Book Day – Love of Reading

We had an incredible World Book Day at STP, with lots of fantastic costumes, from both the children and staff. The main theme of this year’s celebration was ‘What is your reading superpower?’ with a big focus on growing everyone’s love of reading. The teachers had an opportunity to share a favourite book with a class in a different year group. Both children and teachers enjoyed this opportunity, and many teachers are keen to repeat the experience. Children also completed various activities in their classes from recreating their favourite book cover to sharing and reading stories to friends. Well done to staff and parents for creating such interesting costumes and helping the children to see how important reading is for us. Thank you for your continued support for such events.

Parent Information meetings

Year 4 Multiplication Tests

This term, our Year 4 children will undertake the national online Multiplication Test Check. This test will be done by all Y4 children nationally. The test will be administered in the summer term and will involve an online test of 25 multiplication questions. The results will then be shared with us to help us best support the children, as they progress through the Y5 and Y6 maths curriculum.

During the check, there will be an emphasis on the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables, which will form the majority of the questions.

Time Tables Rockstars is the best resource for the children to learn their time tables in a fun and engaging way. Please, please encourage your child to use this as much as possible at home. The Times Table Rockstar’s soundcheck has a similar format to the government’s official times table check so the children will be familiar with answering questions within a time limit. For further information about the MTC please visit the government website which has further information for parents.

Year 2 SATS

SATs tests are completed by all children nationally in Year 2 and at STP we’ve been working hard this half term to prepare our children to showcase their learning in reading and mathematics. Thank you to those families who attended our SATs meeting for parents. We hope you now feel more confident in supporting your child at home.

Year 1 Phonics

The Phonics Screening Check will happen the week commencing Monday 12th June. The Year 1 staff have been working hard to prepare the children for their Phonics Screening Check through daily phonics sessions. We invited parents in at the start of the year to learn about phonics and see it in action in the classroom. We would like to invite Year 1 parents in to school on Tuesday 18th April, 3:00pm-3:30pm to discuss how the screening check will take place and how you can further support your child at home.

Easter 2023

This year we celebrated Easter with an Easter Bonnet Parade for our Pupils in Early Years and Key Stage One and an Egg Decorating Competition for pupils in Key Stage Two.

There were some ‘egg-cellent’ entries to both the bonnet parade and the egg decorating competition. You all must have been ‘eggs-hausted’ after creating such ‘egg-ceptional’ Easter creations.

A cracking time was had by all!

Music Mark Award

We have officially been given the school Music Mark award by Sandwell Music Service in recognition for the amount of quality music that is being taught. All our children are given access to instrumental tuition (this year it has been drumming and brass) and to projects such as Conductive Music (Years 1 and 2) and The CBSO Repertoire Project on The Planet Suite (Year 4).

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Winners

We are delighted to announce that STP won the ‘Classroom Creations’ competition hosted by ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical’.

Our KS2 pupils were very busy before the Christmas break making a variety of wonderful creations; creating dioramas and delicious baked treats inspired by the classic children’s story.

We are extremely proud of what our children achieved. It was a great competition that fuelled their interest and got them excited.

The winning prize includes 35 student tickets and 3 teacher tickets for a weekday matinee performance of the show. The show will be taking place at the Birmingham Hippodrome in the Autumn term; we are currently in the process of getting this booked and will send out further information once this is confirmed.

Well done Key Stage 2!

My Cultural Journey

Looking forward to the Easter holiday? Why not have a look through the activities in My Cultural Journey to see if you can complete any of the 50 things to do in each key stage.

Once you have completed one of the activities, your child needs to record the experience in their portfolio. This could include a photo, memento, or reflection. Remember to present your work as you would in school and write in detail. Your teachers are looking for quality work so that they can give out more certificates.

How many activities have you completed? On completion of 25 activities, your child will be eligible for a Bronze or even Silver Award. We are looking forward to celebrating their participation and experiences in a special assembly at the end of the Summer term.

Let’s work together to inspire, encourage and create special memories for our children.

Attendance

Certificates for those who still have 100% attendance were rewarded a certificate in our special end of term assembly.

Next term anyone still achieving 100% by the end of Summer Term will accompany Lady Grundy on a special Reward Trip to the Cinema in the final week of the school year.

Attendance this Spring Term has taken a dip. Please support us to help your child make the progress they need to catch up by making sure your child attends every day in Summer Term.

Next Term; Summer 1

Parents Evening - Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th April

Parents’ Evening will be held over two evenings in person at school. Bookings can be made via EduLink One. This is the most important of all of the opportunities to come and speak to staff about how well your child is doing and what they need to do to make even better progress in the final term before they move up to their new class.

King's Coronation

How exciting for us to be able to witness such a special time in history and we plan on ensuring we mark His Majesty the King’s Coronation here at STP. There will of course be a themed lunch, class activities and assemblies, but we will also be joining with the wider spirit of the Coronation and doing our bit to help out. Each year group will be doing something to help the environment, school or wider community to make the celebrations even more meaningful.

Family Forum – Wednesday 17th May

This year we have tried to make our Family Forum meetings accessible to as many families as possible. The Summer Term’s Family Forum will take place after-school at 5pm on Wednesday 17th May. This is to allow families who would usually be at work during the school day to attend a Family Forum meeting.

The focus of the Summer Family Forum meeting will be Internet Safety at home.

The Family Forum is your opportunity to come and talk to us about the school and how well it serves the needs of our pupils and families.
