TGA Newsletter Easter 2022

Headteacher Update -

Rachael Skelton

This half term has seen students take part in a range of activities which are allowing them to rise to a challenge and take risks as they become able and qualified during their time at The Gainsborough Academy.

One student, Lucas, should be very proud of his achievement as he has walked over a million steps in March as he raised money for The Ambulance staff charity.

The eco council have been working with the whole school community to take responsibility for their actions as it comes to reducing the amount of litter in school and protecting our environment.

Over the Easter break many of our Year 11 students will be working hard during some additional revision sessions as they prepare for the upcoming GCSE exams during the summer term.

This term has also seen all Year 7 students begin peripatetic music lessons as part of their music curriculum. This gives all of our students the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument.

As an academy we take pride in the wide range of entitlement and enrichment opportunities which are available to our students and you will be able to read more about these opportunities throughout this newsletter.

Trips

Easter Ski Trip

This Easter we have a group of staff and students taking part in a ski trip to Italy. They are having a great time and the weather for skiing is great.

Hope For The Future Summit

Miss Douglas was privileged this half term to take nine students to the Trust Eco Summit, pupils were outstanding ambassadors throughout the day exemplifying The Gainsborough Way.

Eco-Council students took part in the Hope For The Future Summit Meeting at Clifton School last week. They enjoyed workshops looking at what makes a good leader, creating time capsule artefacts, preparing for meetings with local MPs, and hearing talks from 2 young climate activists.

Tilly Lovely, Year 9, explains all about the day;

“On Thursday the 17th of March, the eco council went on a visit to Clifton Community School in Rotherham to take part in an Eco summit led by Hope for the Future. During this, we made posters showing the traits of a good leader and talked about our hopes for the future and filled in sheets for a time capsule. We also had environmental talks about COP 26 and the work that they do at Hope for the Future. It was a great day and everyone learned a lot.”

Department Update

PSHE/RE

It’s been an exciting year for PSHE and RE. A full ‘revamp’ of our Curriculums has led to an exciting year of developments within both subjects. I was fortunate to be appointed as the new Head of Department in January and am looking forward to the opportunities that this presents.

Religious Education is still in its infancy within the Academy, and it’s been fantastic to see students engaging with a range of topics studied from Christianity to Religion and the Media to Homelessness. Within RE students focus on two core areas of learning ‘Knowledge and Understanding’ and ‘Personal Opinion and Debate’, by focusing on these areas we aim to develop subject comprehension as well as key skills transferable across many other subjects.

During one Form Time a week students also focus on their Religious Education, spending time as a class discussing and debating issues from around the world.

Personal, Social, Health Education is delivered on a rotational basis with RE in Key Stage 3 and in a workshop type format for students in Key Stage 4. Students will study Sex and Relationships within this as full units and it is recommended that parents/ carers take the opportunity to read through the policy available on our website. So far this year students have studied a variety of topics such as discrimination and the Equality Act.

MFL

Spanish

Una obra de teatro estupenda

In the first week of March, Year 10 and 11 Spanish students watched our visiting performance of "En El Campamento." This performance, about two students on a camping holiday, was in Spanish for its entirety. The students really enjoyed it, concentrated well and some said they wished it had been longer. It has given them a real boost of confidence with how much they could understand. The Academy would like to thank Onatti Productions and their performers and we look forward to welcoming them next year to play to our French and Spanish students. We will be doing even more enrichment activities in MFL like this going forward.

WPT Introduces Uniform Bank Scheme

At a time when a lot of families are tightening their belts, we’re aware that many could benefit from a little extra support when it comes to buying school uniforms and other essentials – such as coats and PE kits – that children need for school. That’s why we’ve decided to create a Trust-wide uniform bank of good quality, new and used items – providing a sustainable way to recycle and repurpose school uniforms.

This scheme also gives families – who have unwanted uniforms and items – the opportunity to make a difference to other children and help the environment by donating items and ultimately reducing the amount of waste that ends up in bins and landfill.
