SAIL Housing Solutions

I had the opportunity to attend an informational meeting last week for SAIL Housing Solutions, an organization committed to finding solutions for Interdependent living for families with adult individuals with disabilities. SAIL is a nonprofit organized by parents of adults with disabilites.

While SAIL does not find housing for adults with disabilites, they are committed to finding solutions for adults with disabilites. Each adult with a disability has unique housing and interdependent needs and thus solutions for finding housing can be challenging and frustrating for parents/guardians. SAIL brings families together to connect with each other to find the resources needed to achieving these solutions and for finding compatible roommates.

SAIL provides Sailing Lessons. Below is a description of

SAIL’s Sailing Lessons:

SAILing Lessons: “SAIL believes in connecting people to people and people to resources which is why we created SAILing Lessons. These In-Person informational sessions for family members focus on a particular area of interest or challenge related to developing a housing solution for their loved one. (e.g., Identifying your support network, creating a housing vision, navigating benefits, researching existing housing models, investigating support technology, exploring staffing, planning for the move-in, etc). The goal of SAILing Lessons is to connect people who will work together to develop a housing solution and people with resources to help make the development of the solution a little easier.”

In addition to SAILing lessons, SAIL also provides connections for Friendship and for finding a Roommate. Below is a description of Friendship Connect offered through SAIL.

Friendship Connect:

“Friendship Connect is SAIL’s initiative to connect people to people through live events and SAIL’s online portal. Whether you are looking to grow your loved one’s circle of friends or hoping to find a compatible roommate, Friendship Connect is a great start.” If you are interested in learning more about SAIL, check out their website or attend a meeting. Maybe your young adult is ready to SAIL. SAIL Housing Solutions

THE HUMAN EYE

This week we will talk more specifically how we actually see. In order to produce clear images, the eyes must complete a 5 step process. Here we go:

1. Light enters through the cornea- When we look at an object, the light that is reflected off the object enters the eye through the cornea(the clear front layer of the eye). The cornea bends the light before it passes through the Aqueous Humor (waterway substance) behind the cornea.

2.The pupil adjusts in response to the light- The light continues to travel through the pupil (the black opening) in the center of the iris (the colored muscular area). The iris contracts/expands allowing more/less light through the pupil.

3. The lens focuses the light onto the retina- As the light passes through the pupil to the lens behind it, the lens adjusts it’s shape to bend and focus the light a second time. So now that the light has been bent twice,”this double bending” has actually flipped the image upside down.

4.The light is focused onto the retina- The light passes through to the back of the eye until it reaches the retina. The retina contains photoreceptors made up of rods and cones which are responsible for transforming the light rays into electrical impulses. Most of the impulses are focused onto the focal point of the retina called the Macula.

5.The optic nerve transmits visual information to the brain-The nerves of the retina collect all of these electrical impulses which then travel through the optic nerve at the very back of the eye up to the occipital lobe in the back of the brain.

Meditation with Ms. McCuiston

Dear Jardon Families,

It’s what we longed for in the depths of winter when we couldn’t feel our toes, and would go days without seeing the sun. But the sunny weather doesn’t come without its challenges. Here are some essential self-care tips for taking care of your mental and physical health when the temperature skyrockets:

Take a breather: when you’re feeling hot and bothered, it’s easy to get wound up. Whether you’re at work or with friends, remember that it’s OK to take a few moments for yourself. Try going on a short, shady walk – or have a lie-down and some quiet time.

Try to get a good night’s sleep-I know, it’s easier said than done. But sleep is such a vital ingredient for good mental health that it’s important to keep trying to get those hours in. Create a good airflow in your home by opening your bedroom door and windows throughout the house, and having a lukewarm bath or shower before you get into bed can help keep your core temperature down.

Make sure you’re getting enough fluid: this one may seem obvious, but how much fluid is enough? In normal weather, it’s recommended that we drink 8 glasses of water each day But when the temperature starts to rise it’s important to replace the water that we’re losing, so you’ll want to amp up your intake. Make sure to take regular sips of water throughout the day – even before you begin to feel thirsty – and if you’re going out, plan to take a bottle of water with you so that you don’t get caught short-handed.

Remember that you are worth your own self-care! If you have any questions or ideas about self-care, please email me at jennifer.mmcuiston@hazelparkschools.org
