World No Tobacco Day- 2022 LSD DAV PUBLIC SCHOOL'S INITIATIVE

Our environment is our reflection – let’s get intoxicated with love & respect for oneself and others instead of getting indulged in false intoxication and ruin ourselves. Lets determine on this NO TOBACCO DAY MAY- 31st 2022 to create the kind of world we want and this lofty endeavor begins with each one of us. My dear young students, the champions of change and new age. I wish to whole heartedly applaud you all for showing tremendous efforts in raising and spreading the social issues time and again. This time the theme of World No Tobacco Day 2022 is “To Protect the Environment” highlighting that, tobacco pollutes the planet and damages the health of all people. The facts are alarming- 600,000,000 trees chopped down to make cigarettes, 84,000,000 tons of CO2 emissions released into the air raising global temperatures and 22,000,000,000 liters of water used to make cigarettes. We cannot ignore the harmful impact of the tobacco industry on the environment, further harming human health, through the cultivation, production, distribution, consumption, and post consumer waste of tobacco. Every life is precious on this earth and deserves good healthy environment. It’s our responsibility to aware the smokers about its disastrous effects on their life as well as people around. I am sure during this week long awareness campaign you must have realized how we are adding unnecessary pressure to our planet already scarce resources and fragile ecosystem. I hope all of us contribute in the best of our capacities towards the much required change !

Cigarette Butts ?????

If I asked you, what is the most common form of plastic pollution, what would you say? Plastic bottles? Straws?

They are not the correct answer. Cigarette butts are actually the most abundant form of plastic waste in the world, with about 4.5 trillion individual butts polluting our global environment.

Cigarette butts are primarily plastic. Cigarette butts are small and tend to go unnoticed but they are hiding almost everywhere. They are made of cellulose acetate, a man-made plastic material, and contain hundreds of toxic chemicals. While cigarette filters, or the plastic part of butts, can take up to 10 years to completely degrade, the chemicals they release can remain in the environment for many more years beyond the life of the cigarette butt itself. These lingering toxins include arsenic (also used in rat poisoning), lead (a poison that can affect the brain development of children) and nicotine. They slowly leach toxins into our natural systems, presenting a serious threat to us and our environment.
