About the AIM for Climate Initiative
The Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) is a joint initiative created by the United States and the United Arab Emirates. AIM for Climate addresses crises such as global hunger, food insecurity, and climate change by uniting participants to significantly increase and accelerate investment in, and/or other support for, climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation over five years (2021 – 2025).
AIM for Climate seeks to drive more rapid and transformative climate action in the agricultural sector, empowering agriculture to be part of the solution to address the climate crisis, build resilience to its impacts, and create co-benefits of climate action. AIM for Climate’s impact will aid climate mitigation, poverty alleviation, and agricultural adaptation, recognizing that smallholder farmers, especially women, and communities from low- and middle-income countries are most susceptible to the negative effects of climate change.
Diversity, gender equity, and inclusion are critical to the success of the mission. AIM for Climate recognizes the wide range of participants necessary to achieve its goal and seeks to draw on diverse knowledge, experiences, and cultures.
- AIM for Climate Government Partners provide the crucial foundation of the initiative through a wave of new public investment in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation. Other sectors, including business, philanthropy, and other non-government partners, are invited to build upon that foundation with AIM for Climate Innovation Sprints or as AIM for Climate Knowledge Partners.
- AIM for Climate Innovation Sprints are investments in specific, impactful, expedited efforts led and funded by AIM for Climate partners to achieve a specific outcome or output in agricultural innovation.
- AIM for Climate Knowledge Partners provide critical knowledge for identifying investment gaps, challenges, and opportunities for collaboration.
Since its inception, AIM for Climate partners have increased investments in agriculture and food systems innovation to more than $17 billion and launched 78 Innovation Sprints. The total number of partners is 600+, which now includes 56 Government Partners and more than 550 non-governmental partners, comprising businesses, academia, not-for-profits, philanthropies, think tanks, and others. New investments, partners and Innovation Sprints will be announced at COP29 on Monday. 18 November.
Participation in AIM for Climate is voluntary.
Why AIM for Climate?
AIM for Climate is a major global coalition focused on agricultural innovation with tangible targets aligned with the Conference of Parties (COP) the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). While discussions around climate change are largely centered on greenhouse gas emissions from industry and energy systems, there has been little focus to date on the impact of agriculture and food systems. The AIM for Climate Initiative seeks to amplify the role that the agricultural sector can and should play in addressing global climate change.
We must address global hunger, food insecurity, and climate change simultaneously, and we can do so by investing in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation. Innovation in agriculture can help offset the impact of food production and food systems on climate change. Additional public and private sector investment in agricultural research and development (R&D) is necessary to meet the range of future challenges associated with climate change. Investment in public R&D is the primary driver of long-term agricultural productivity growth in the United States.
Studies have shown public investment in agricultural research has resulted in large economic benefits, with annual rates of return between 20 and 60 percent. However, funding in recent decades for public agricultural R&D in the United States and elsewhere has declined or stagnated.
AIM for Climate presents an opportunity to enable solutions at the intersection of food security and climate and is uniquely positioned to build greater public-private investment and cross-sectoral partnerships. Investment and/or support for climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation over the AIM for Climate timeframe (2021 – 2025) will create a positive multiplier effect for people and the planet across:
- Agriculture – adapting agriculture to be more resilient to the impacts of climate change
- Food – meeting increasing food demand
- Climate – mitigating agriculture’s contribution to climate change
Agriculture is recognized as being part of the climate change problem, but agricultural innovation can be part of the solution as no other sector holds the potential to reduce and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while boosting adaptation and global food security at the same time.
