About
Belonging is a basic human need. Feeling accepted as members of a group, valued, and connected to a community are all part of belonging. Artists create a sense of belonging by transforming spaces, through representation, and by helping to nurture healthy, vibrant, and joyful communities where people feel welcome. Reflecting on belonging through art allows us to observe and interpret social behaviors while creating opportunities to build better, more equitable societies. Through diverse and inclusive art exhibitions, programs, and conversations, the new UVU Museum of Art is committed to being a place where everyone feels welcome, respected, seen, and heard.
“The Art of Belonging” exhibition invites BIPOC (Black/Indigenous/People of Color) artists working in the state of Utah and with Utah roots*, to submit work that explores themes of belonging and dis-belonging. Belonging is an ancient concept rooted in indigenous knowledge that is relevant today and central to future-facing movements such as Afro-futurism, which combine science-fiction with history and culture to envision alternate worlds. The concept of belonging can spark new visions of how we can all move and work towards social, racial, and economic justice.
“The Art of Belonging” exhibition recognizes that this moment in time is an ideal one for asking: How might we imagine a truly just and equitable Utah where everyone belongs? To generate answers to that question, we invite BIPOC artists in Utah to help us imagine new narratives, ways of being, and expressions of hope.
