The Perfect Prom Flower By Hannah Mudry

As prom approaches, dates are trying to find the perfect flower to give their special someone. All flowers have hidden meanings and stories that can make a picture perfect night.

For pure and deep love, a red carnation would be the perfect symbol of just that. A pale red flower is known to say “my heart aches for you” and a deep red flower represents distinct love and admiration. While red may be the most popular flower, it is not the only color. White carnations symbolize purity and luck, pink carnations symbolize gratitude, and yellow flowers symbolize rejection and disappointment.

A heliotrope represents adoration for the recipient. The story is an interesting one. Clytie was a nymph who loved the sun god, Helios, but he ultimately left her for another. In response, Clytie told Helios' daughter about the affair. Helios then buried Clytie underground and turned her into a heliotrope. Now, her love lives within the flower as she still follows his light as he travels across the sky.

A purple lilac describes the emotions of first love. This flower also got its meaning from the legend of a nymph. The god of forest and field, Pan, followed Syringa to show her his affections, but ultimately frightened her. Syringa turned herself into a bush to hide from Pan. This bush was, in fact, a purple lilac; however, depending on how the sun hits the bush, the lilac’s meaning changes. A white lilac represents youth and blue lilac represents happiness and tranquility as other emotions Syringa could have felt at the end of her story.

Everyone knows that a red rose represents love, but does everyone know why? Aphrodite, the goddess of love, created the rose and her tears and the blood from her love, Adonis, watered the ground to grow these red roses. His blood is what created the deep red color. They are known as a symbol of love until death because of this legend.

When purchasing flowers for this prom, remember that everything has a hidden meaning. These four flowers show how true that can be. Following the story of a Greek legend to show devotion and love is a simple, but unforgettable action.
