Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

I wanted to focus my message this week on the power of music with some fantastic musical events coming up over the next week. This Thursday sees the OAFs Music Night taking place in the Prep Hall. See more details later on in the newsletter in how to book tickets - it promises to be a fantastic night.

On the same night we have our orchestra performing at the Festival Youth Concert at Kingsdale Foundation School which will be a brilliant opportunity for the children to perform in front of a new audience and an unfamiliar auditorium, as well as meet peers from other schools.

And our brilliant Minims will be performing outside Dulwich Books on Croxted Rd at 10.15am tomorrow morning as part of the West Dulwich Spring Fair so do come along and support if you can. It is a wonderful thing to combine with our Senior Schools Fair going on in the Prep Hall tomorrow morning.

Music is a fantastic way to exercise a different part of your brain and access a new skill set; co-ordination, memory, collaboration, resilience, creativity and having no fear of making mistakes are all part of learning music whichever instrument you try your hand (or voice) at. We have put together a short video below to show a small flavour of the different instruments available to learn at Oakfield Prep but there are many, many more to choose from. We hope you will be inspired to try a new instrument or even pick-up an old instrument once again.

Have lovely weekends all,

Moyra Thompson

Games Afternoons

Rain or shine all children in Years 2 - 6 are practising hard in their Games afternoons for upcoming sports fixtures. Spectators are welcome to all.

YEAR 6

In Maths last week, Year 6 were investigating Mobius Strips. A Mobius Strip (also known as a Mobius band) is a surface that can be formed by attaching the ends of a strip of paper together with a half-twist.

The children discovered that a Mobius Strip is single-sided and only has one edge! Although it looks three-dimensional it is only two-dimensional.

They developed their problem solving by investigating putting different numbers of half-twists in a piece of paper and concluded that if the number of twists was odd then it would form a Mobius Strip.

YEAR 5

Scary! Terrifying! Infamous!

The children have been making incredible Greek Mythological Beasts.

Last week we were looking at the Greek Myths and coming up with our own horrifying creatures. A range of powers from strength, flight to moving through dimensions.

They are creative and unnerving at the same time!

British Museum

Year 5 went to the British Museum this week and had a fantastic time learning about Greek Mythology. We saw so a wide spread of ancient artwork, pottery with meaningful and intriguing armour. The children completed a treasure hunt and learnt from the British Museum Education team about the Myths on vases. They knew so much already which was highly impressive. Well done all!

YEAR 2

Mathematics and Music!

This week in mathematics the year 2 children recapped telling the time. They revised telling the time to the hour, half past and quarter past/ quarter to. They moved onto some tricky problems relating to time. To solve these them they needed to use their reasoning and problem-solving skills. They were also able to use physical analogue clocks.

During the week all the year 2 children took place in a fantastic drumming workshop hosted by primary workshops for schools. The children learnt about African drums, their history and how they are played. They enjoyed playing along, learning about rhythm, following instructions and playing together as part of a band.

The Year 2 children had another fantastic week last week! We would like to highlight our outdoor learning in mathematics. The children learnt to use directional and positional language to describe turns, movement and give directions of getting from one place to another. We loved learning outside, using chalk and practical resources. We used the chess board to move from square to square following precise directions. The children especially enjoyed practising making a quarter turn, half turn and a three-quarter turn with their bodies!

‘Learning outside was so much fun!’ said Grace.

YEAR 1

The Year 1 children had a special talk from Luna’s mummy all about Judaism and tried some of the special Challah bread with honey.

Upper Foundation

What a delicious week we have had in Upper Foundation! The sweet smell of ginger and cinnamon has been present amongst our learning and we have explored to story of The Gingerbread Man in greater detail. We had a wonderful P4C lesson: If you were a gingerbread person, where would you run to and hide, to keep safe from the hungry humans? Wonderful, imaginative answers were said in response. ‘I would hide in the story book, like camouflage!’ ‘I would hide at my grandparents' house; I feel safe there!’

We were so fortunate to have a wonderful talk from Imaan and her mummy this week.

They told us all about Eid, also known as the 'festival of breaking the fast'. Imaan's mum spoke about how it is a joyous occasion that marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting for Muslims, when they abstain from food and drink between dawn and sunset.

They told us they had great family fun at their grandparent's house to mark the occasion. They enjoyed tasting lots of home-cooked foods, opening presents together, celebrations with smiles and kissing of the hand and even participated in a game of cricket!

Thank you, Imaan's mummy!
