Literacy
Persuasive Advertisement
Our literacy this half term has linked closely with our topic. For our first piece, we learnt how to write a persuasive advertisement to try and convince others that Hogwarts is the best school in the country. To do this, we explored how students would feel there and identified which skills and features we would need to include.
Before writing our piece, we looked at a variety of skills. These included: powerful adjectives and up-levelling vocabulary, rhetorical questions, sophisticated conjunctions, modal verbs, and rule of three.
Have a read of some of our amazing pieces... Are you convinced?
Explanation Text
Our second piece was an explanation text, focusing on mythical creatures from the Harry Potter universe. As a hook, we pieced together images of different creatures from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K Rowling. We then used post-it notes to splat expanded noun phrases around each creature.
We worked on skills such as: synonyms and expanded noun phrases, effective vocabulary, similes, facts and opinion, use of present tense, sentence openers.
We also used our internet research skills to find our interesting facts about different beasts.
We then thought about how we would structure our writing by working together. It was tricky because we had to include all of the features we had learnt about!
Maths
In maths we have explored place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and shape. We also studied fractions, decimals and percentages.
We enjoyed applying our knowledge into different contexts. Here is Miss Dakin’s group practicing their budgeting skills using the Harry Potter online shop.
Topic
The Wand Chooses the Wizard...
Our focus for this half term was Design Technology.
At the beginning of the half term, we each received a letter inviting us to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! In order to do this, we needed a magical wand.
Before we could make our wands, we first had to gather ideas on what we would want our wand to look like and why. We also explored the different properties of wands.
Here are some of our final products. We are really proud of them!
PSHE / RSE
Internet Safety Day
We dressed up in grey and black to represent anonymity online. We also took part in several activities where we discussed age restrictions, cyber-bullying, and how to keep ourselves safe online.
Children’s Mental Health Week
To kickstart the week, we ‘Dressed to Express’! We loved discussing with our friends what our outfits mean and how they show off our personality.
In our PSHE lesson, we discussed how we can look after our mental health. We also took part in different mindfulness activities through the week.
Throughout the half term, we have also looked at physical health. Specifically, how to react in medical emergencies, emergency services and basic first aid.
