CARING FOR TREES IN A DROUGHT

Several recent nationwide stories show that mature trees in a well-landscaped yard increase your house’s property value by 7-19 percent! Beyond that trees also filter water and air, reduce stormwater runoff, reduce energy costs, reduce the urban heat island effect, improve mental wellbeing, store carbon, and provide animals habitat.

To protect your trees from the current drought, you can follow these tips:

Water slow and deep. The best way to water trees is by slowly soaking them until the water reaches 12 to 18 inches deep.

Water the dripline. Focus your watering at the dripline, not close to the trunk.

Use a soaker hose, a hose sprinkler on a low setting, or drip tubes.

Avoid fertilizing. It may burn your tree’s roots.

Wait to prune. Schedule any major pruning until winter.

Check soil moisture. Use a screwdriver to check the soil at least 6-inches deep and near the drip line of your tree. If the soil is dry, add water. If the soil is wet, do not add water.

Use mulch. Mulch helps reduce evaporation. Spread the mulch under the dripline of your tree but keep it one foot from the trunk. Mulch to a depth of 3 to 6 inches.

HOUSING ELEMENT AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW

Temple City is now entering the last phase of the Housing Element process. The Planning Commission will review the Housing Element, take public comment, and make a recommendation to the City Council at the following time and location:

  • September 13 at 7:30 p.m.
  • City Council Chambers, 5938 Kauffman Avenue

To view the Housing Element and a summary fact sheet, please visit the Housing Element webpage. To submit your comments please e-mail the City at planning@templecity.us.

The City’s Housing Element is a required chapter or “element” of the City’s long range General Plan. It acts as a plan to addresses how the City can meet its share of the region’s housing need. It does this by creating programs and policies to preserve, improve, and develop housing for all income levels. Every eight years, a City must update the plan with new policies and strategies that effect how land is used and developed. The plan can determine the shape, the pattern, and the density of housing development within a community as well as housing programs.
