The Athens lived as a democracy, the people had a say in everything. They were known for their architecture, art, poetry and their feasts and excessive drinking. Solon the reformer from Athens, also brought in the idea of secularism. Which in today's society, I believe is very prominent. The basis is ancient Athens enjoyed their lives.
Along with the Peloponnesian Wars, the Sicily expedition shown itself in 427. At this time Athens and Sparta already concluded their peace treaty in 421, Athenians were allies of Sicily and set out to conquer their island. The first year became successful for the Athens but it ended up with Spartans involving themselves which led to the Athenian's expedition force being destroyed.
The last war of the Peloponnesian Wars was the Decelean War. At this time Spartans had a strong army and Athens had many losses. The Spartans prevented the Athenians from reaching their silver mines, Athens started to fall apart one by one. The repercussions of this war led to Athens being a democracy fall under thirty tyrants for a year.
