THE PENN RADIATION ONCOLOGY SPOTLIGHT
A Message from Dr. Metz
Welcome to the Summer edition of Spotlight! It is a time of transition with the new Academic year; we have said farewell to a number of graduates of our programs while welcoming a new group to our team. We have also had a number of promotions and changes in responsibilities for a number of individuals—Congrats to all!! It is also wonderful to see all the events that have been happening across our facilities. Our team has also been traveling to national and international meetings to represent the department with their research and expertise. We still need to be cautious and follow the Covid-19 recommendations that continue to evolve, but I hope to see more and more normalcy. Of course, we hope to see you at the Radiation Oncology BBQ at the end of August! It will be the first in person event for the entire department since prior to Covid-19. I expect we will have another opportunity to have a really big cake at that event also!!
Brachytherapy Suite Ribbon Cutting
On May 16th, the department celebrated the opening of our new Perelman Radiation Oncology Brachytherapy Suite. We are very excited to be able to offer this modality as an additional option to clinical care and educational training. Special thanks to Dr. Neil Taunk, Director of Brachytherapy and Procedural Radiation, for his hard work and dedication in leading this project from inception to completion.
Proton Alumni Reception
Alumni patients, caregivers, faculty, and staff all gathered together on June 7 to celebrate the 9th Annual Proton Alumni Reception at the Penn Museum. After two years of not being able to gather together, everyone enjoyed getting the chance to see each other again, and hear a few words from legendary coach and one of the co-founders of the Philadelphia chapter of Coaches Vs Cancer.
IBA ConformalFLASH Alliance
IBA announced the launch of the ConformalFLASH Alliance, which aims to accelerate the delivery of ConformalFLASH Proton Therapy to patients. The ConformalFLASH Alliance brings together academic and industry expertise, including Penn Radiation Oncology, to foster a joint understand of the fundamentals of FLASH therapy. In the press release, Dr. Metz said, "Building on our research of FLASH Proton Therapy, we look forward to deepening our national and international collaborations and advancing knowledge of this technology as a potential treatment option."
Isocenter
The RadOnc Intranet site “ISOCENTER” is now live, and ready to use as your central place for news, announcements, events and quick links. Some important things to keep in mind as you become acquainted with the ISOCENTER:The site can only be accessed via UPHS log-in; if you are remote, you will need to be on VPN (see attached instructions - or visit https://www.uphs.upenn.edu/network/)
- The site can only be accessed via UPHS log-in; if you are remote, you will need to be on VPN (see attached instructions - or visit https://www.uphs.upenn.edu/network/)
- The site is regularly updated, and meant to eliminate email blasts - you will need to check back at least 1-2 times a week to get news/updates/event information!
- The Directory on the site is fully searchable - not only by name - but also by location, role etcetera. We need your help to keep it updated though!
- The current site is only about 70% complete; in the coming months there will continue to be changes, updates and upgrades.
- When the site is 100% complete, it will include a calendar view of events and the addition of Division header with several subpages that can be filtered by areas of interest.
- We welcome your feedback on the site - there is a link in the footer that allows you to submit feedback, or report technical issues
- Please feel free to submit content to keep the site up-to-date! There is another link in the footer to submit content (including events, announcements, news etcetera)
The ISOCENTER is built on a SharePoint platform; as Penn continues to release more Office 365 tools, we hope to integrate them more into this site, which will allow it to be more interactive (i.e. ability to save events directly to your calendar). In the interim - please continue to check the site, and provide feedback via the links in the footer!

Five Questions With...
Brett Hartl
Physicist at PCAM
1. What is a typical work day like for you?
A nice thing about my work at Penn is the variety. A day can be filled with QA procedures, machine support, teaching, treatment planning, etc., but the through line is problem solving. Figuring out solutions, and communicating them effectively, to help the team provide the best possible care.
2. What led you to work at Penn Radiation Oncology?
My focus in undergrad was nuclear physics. I found it interesting, but wanted to find a more practical application for what I was learning; one that could more directly help others. I came to Penn as a graduate student in 2010, found what I was looking for, and have enjoyed working with an evolving and talented team ever since.
3. What are you currently watching/streaming?
‘The Great’ on Hulu is perfect. The dark comedy, the irreverent tone, the incredible acting, and the fact that they don’t worry much about historical accuracy. I love it all.
4. As it gets warmer, what’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
My favorite ice cream flavor is whatever you’ll give me…or whatever I can easily take.
5. What was the best/favorite concert you ever attended?
Manchester Orchestra’s ‘A Black Mile to the Surface’ tour was probably my favorite. An album I love, performed beautifully, with a crowd of people just happy to be there. What else do you need?
Proton Therapy in Cyprus, Greece
Dr. James Metz, Fabian Marechal, Dr. Costas Koumenis and Debra Stephen traveled to Cyprus in April to work on a potential agreement to establish the first Proton Therapy Treatment Center in that country. The Center would treat the citizens of Cyprus as well as patients in the southeast region of the Mediterranean. Rad Onc’s participation would include clinical training and a range of other services.
Some of the highlights of the visit included meetings with Kyriacos Koushos, the Deputy Minister to the President of Cyprus, and Michalis Hadjipantela, the Minister of Health. The objective of these meetings was to strengthen the support for a Proton Treatment Center in Cyprus. We discussed the role of proton therapy in cancer treatment, Penn’s leadership and expertise in the field, and the socioeconomic benefits to the country of having the first proton center in the region.
The Rad Onc Team also attended a Summit on The Future of Proton Therapy in Cyprus that was held at the Cyprus Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) on the campus of the University of Cyprus. Professor Constantinos Christofides, Chairman of CCRI Board of Directors, had previously invited Drs. Metz and Koumenis to present at the Summit.
Dr. Metz spoke on Proton Therapy: Here to stay...or gone in a Flash! He covered the past, present and future of proton therapy and its importance for the region.
Global Education
Onsite global education has continued with more visitors from Singapore and we have been meeting with colleagues from LGH and Virtua as they prepare for the opening of their proton centers in the fall.
