Soulchess is a band based in Nashville, Tennessee that defies what you may typically think of as ‘Nashville music’. Consisting of members from wildly varying musical backgrounds, the band has a sound that is the epitome of a musical fusion.
From tight rhythms and strong melodies to sweeping melodic bass lines reminiscent of funk and progressive rock. All the way to the aggressive beats of drum n bass and punk rock. These defining features make up their expansive sound that is packed with energy and genre blending.
Comprised of 4 guys each who provide a different spark to each song; Soulchess is a sum of its parts rather than just an individual effort. Forming in 2020 mostly by happenstance, they immediately gelled from the first note played. Going from a previous band that was more in the soulful genre; Chris, Jason, And Jameel needed a singer. This is where Derrian entered the picture after witnessing him take control of a whole crowd during a jam night. They knew they found their front man with the artistic vision being guided by guitarist/programming producer Chris Goodyear. His appreciation for drum and bass/dance music’s ‘big sound’ seeps into the very fiber of what Soulchess is trying to do. Take a song that is basic at its core and can stand on its own, then remix it as a DJ would.
It’s an experiment, and more so its an experience that is aimed at bringing people together to enjoy the universal language of music. Whether it’s Derrian’s tight vocals that evoke the very emotion of each song, Jameel’s varied beats that give you the feel of dance music. Jason’s Sweeping melodic bass lines that give each song its character. Or it’s the programming and producing prowess of Chris that allows each song to go from something basic to something incredible. Each song is unique in its journey.
Soulchess have began performing live shows again since the relaxation of pandemic restrictions and have been receiving repeat bookings spurred on by the band's live powerful audience capturing presence. Soulchess have begun to get a reputation for giving every show their all and really putting on a show. The band have their next single scheduled for release mid summer and are currently booking shows for late summer early fall 2021.
