2017 AB SHOW pre-show Kickoff

AB Show 2017 kicked off Wednesday with a range of pre-show events, including a number of informative seminars, as well as guided tours of four facilities in the Orlando area.

Our first stop was in Largo, where we toured the Highland Recreation Complex, which opened in 2013. The facility offers a 3-story indoor play structure, party rooms, an interactive gaming room, fitness areas, a gym, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, the tallest municipal water slide in Pinellas County and a 1/13-mile indoor walking track. Be sure to check out the awesome slide connecting the first and second floors!

The second tour of the day took us over to Old Tampa Bay to the Bryan Glazer Family JCC. The historic Fort Homer W. Hesterly Armory has been transformed into an impressive 100,000-square-foot community space. Opened in December 2016, the JCC houses a Fitness Center, the Mezrah Family Aquatic Center, the Roberta M. Goulding Visual Arts Center operated by the city of Tampa, the Florida-Israel Business Accelerator, an area for teens and ‘tweens, a premier event venue, and community services space for Tampa Jewish Family Services.

Registration is open at AB Show 2017 in Orlando. If you haven't already, be sure to sign up for your free expo pass.

The third facility tour of the day took us to the RDV Sportsplex, a world-class facility that artfully blends leading-edge technology and programs with top-tier service and a friendly and knowledgeable team. This breathtaking wellness, fitness and health center includes a multitude of fitness, functional training, aquatic, ice, gymnasium, tennis, racquetball/squash and rehab areas.

It might have been pre-show Wednesday but that doesn't mean AB Show guests were allowed to slack. Those that attended an architecture session geared towards workshopping the facility design process were treated to a special hands-on experience. Those present were split into teams that competed to design a model facility. Each team had to justify, program, plan, design and present their facility for judgment by their peers. Participants discussed the proposed project, including budget limitations, what building components best serve their constituents, site constraints, and sustainable design strategies. The session was presented by Stephen DeHekker, Erik Kocher and Dan Sullivan, all of Hastings+Chivetta.

The rapid growth of the aging population (age 50+) presents unprecedented opportunity for the fitness professional who understands how to train these clients effectively. This comprehensive and innovative certification program was aimed at those that want to become experts in functional fitness for mature adults.

This interactive workshop offered participants the tools and skills necessary to implement functional training techniques, strategies and movements that are important to aging clientele. They also learned to conduct meaningful functional assessments, as well as how to develop effective exercise programs.

Our final tour of the day was Lake Nona’s Sports & Performance District. Lake Nona, a master-planned community, is the new home of the United States Tennis Association and a beautiful new facility that provides a tennis experience like never before. With 100 tennis courts spread across 64 acres, the USTA National Campus offers unparalleled playing, training and educational experiences for recreational and competitive players, coaches and spectators. In addition, the Collegiate Center boasts 12 courts, is home to University of Central Florida Tennis and is host to numerous college matches.
