Class 5 Autumn 2022

The Great Fire of London

To kick start our topic of the Great Fire of London we baked some bread, just like Thomas Farriner on Pudding Lane in 1666.

After our hook into our learning we have explored what life was like during 1666 and have learnt lots of interesting facts about the fire and the changes that have taken place as a result of the fire.

To consolidate our learning on the buildings methods used in 1666 we participated in an outdoor workshop to learn about and to try re-creating Tudor houses using the wattle and daub method.

To finish our topic off we invited our parents and carers into school to take part in a quiz all about the Great Fire.

Santa's Little Helper

In Autumn 2 the children have been busy helping Santa make toys for Christmas. The children have had to work to a design brief of: a moveable part, made from wood and having a Christmas theme. The children have used junior hacksaws and drills along the way - so enthusiasm at every stage of the topic!

Literacy

In Literacy, in Autumn 1, were very busy writing narratives and a set of instructions. We have had lots of fun learning new skills and applying them in our writing.

In Autumn 2 the children have been busy writing Non-Chronological reports all about Penguins and a story based on the book 'The Journey Home'. The children have tried their hardest during their Literacy lessons which has lead to some amazing improvements in not only handwriting but also the quality of the content of their work.

This has helped to produce some wonderful outcomes!

Maths

In Autumn term 1 the children were very in maths looking at place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and shape!

They started the half term by focusing place value and developed the skills needed to partition numbers into tens and ones. These skills really helped us when we moved onto addition and subtraction as we were successfully able to draw the correct amount of tens and ones to help us answer a calculation.

We then moved onto multiplication and division and even though the children found this tricky they never gave up and our school value of resilience shone through. Multiplication and division have become the focus of our daily arithmetic session to help embed these skills.

In Autumn 2 the children continued with their excellent work in maths and explored fractions, 2D and 3D shape, time, money and position and direction. The children found maths challenging at times this half term, especially with fractions and money, but they never gave up and their resilience was outstanding.

LIRA

During our LIRA sessions we have been looking at lots and lots of different reading skills - the adults that work with us have been blown away by some of the work that we have been producing!

PE

During Autumn term 1 the children enjoyed learning to improve their footballing skills. The learnt how to dribble, pass and shoot at goal. Englands next lot of Lions and Lionesses looks to be very good!

Science

In science we have been focusing on the topic of ‘Animals including humans’ and during this topic have categorised animals into different groups, focusing on their features and whether they are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores.

RE

In Autumn 1 our key question in RE was Why are words special? During this half term we have focused on Christianity and Judaism and looked closely at their holy books.

We learnt that the Bible is written in over 700 different languages, it is the best selling book in the world, that is includes stories, prayers, songs and poems and that it has and Old and New Testament. One of the stories from the old test that we looked closely as was the story of Daniel and lion. The children were able to sequence the story and discuss why Daniel was saved from the lions.

We also looked closely at the Torah and found out that Jewish people show it respect by covering it in red or blue velvet cover and using a Yad to point to the words.

We then looked at two key people from the Torah these being Noah and Moses. We had some really great in-depth discussions about why certain decisions were made and the consequence of those actions.

In Autumn 2 the key question was Why are places special? The children learnt about special places for them but also special places for Christians and Jews. We were very lucky to visit the church and learn lots of information from Father Tim about the special features of a church.

PD and RSHE

We have explored our physical well-being and looked at how we can be healthy. We have discussed physical activity, the importance of sleep and how we can keep ourselves clean. We have also talked about how to stay safe in the sun and how we can make both good and bad choices. We know that being able to make choices is linked to one of our British Values.

Halloween Celebrations

As part of the schools Halloween celebrations the children had the opportunity to attend the Halloween disco and enter the pumpkin competitions. The children had an amazing time at the disco and carving their pumpkins.

Odd Socks Day

As part of national Antibullying week the children learnt about what to do if they feel bullied or witness bullying taking place. On the first day of Anti-Bullying week the children wore odd socks to raise awareness of bullying and celebrate how every one is different.

Christmas!

The children have had a very busy festive period in school. They have performed at the Christmas concert, made cards, baubles, calendars, taken part in Christmas jumper day, had a class Christmas dinner, taken part in Rudolph Run and finished of by having their class Christmas Party. The children have loved every minute of the celebrations!
