Alma Montenegro, AN Exploration of Domestic Labor By: Michelle Montenegro

Project Description: This series is a continuation of a longer-term, larger project called Alma Montenegro exploring my mother and her "American Dream".

Alma Montenegro is centered around my mother and her “American Dream”. Growing up, watching my mom constantly work various house cleaning or babysitting jobs while still struggling to make ends meet, it wasn’t long before I discovered that this dream that hard work brings upward mobility and success was just that-- a dream.

Michelle Montenegro (she/her/ella) is a 19-year-old Los Angeles based mixed media artist. Her work is informed by the social and historical contexts that influence the various layers of her identity and experiences. In this approach, Michelle’s work focuses on the issues of capitalism, migration, family ties, and intergenerational trauma within communities of color. She aims to redistribute power to her subjects and different communities she belongs to through honest storytelling and photographic perspective. More specifically, Michelle combines family photo archives, portrait photography, and collage to achieve her conceptual goals.
