Sustainable Futures Seminar Series 22 September 2022

At this event, The University of Manchester's Prof Julien J. Harou and Dr Catherine Walker joined the Sustainable Futures Seminar Series to discuss equitable co-production of complex human-natural systems & negotiating climate and sustainability challenges in migrant households. The event brought in over 50 internal and external attendees.

Dr Jelena Ponocko, Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Challenge Lead for Net-Zero Futures, was the chair of the event.

Professor Julien Harou, Chair in Water Engineering, Manchester Urban Institute, Manchester Environmental Research Institute, spoke first on "Equitable co-production in the design of complex human-natural systems".

Professor Harou's talk covered water planning in the UK and recent changes, giving examples of how decision-making in human-natural systems has changed in the last decade and highlighting the Water Resources East project and the University of Manchester's role in this. Professor Harou then described how the recent FutureDAMS project tried to use similar methods in the context of international case-studies before broadening the discussion and reflecting on the global status of integrated assessment modelling and its link to governance and sustainability.

Professor Harou ended his segment by participating in a live Q&A session with the attendees.

Dr Catherine Walker, Research Associate at Sustainable Consumption Institute , spoke next on "From the classroom to the home: Negotiating climate and sustainability challenges in migrant households in the UK and Australia".

Dr Walker's talk gave a background to the Young People at a Crossroads (YPAC) project and then outlined policy expectations for how students and families respond to sustainability focused education in the UK and Australia. Dr Walker also offered insights into household sustainability negotiations as reported in YPAC before reflecting what we can we learn from migrant household discussions and negotiations about sustainability.

At the end of her presentation, Dr Walker answered some questions from the attendees.

Our chair, Dr Jelena Ponocko thanked the attendees and our guest speakers and closed the event.
