Announcements
Congratulations Brody graduates! We are proud of you! Best wishes as you begin your residencies and thank you for all that you have done for our simulation program!
We have preliminary floorplans of the new medical education building available for review in our office suite. The building includes a new interprofessional clinical simulation center. Please stop by to review the plans and give us your feedback.
The Introduction to Simulation for Faculty 2023 online course is now available online. We ask all new facilitators to take this course to meet Society for Simulation in Healthcare accreditation standards. Please contact us for the link.
We have new equipment! Thank you to Health Sciences Academic Affairs, Graduate Medical Education, and ECU Health for supporting the BSOM Simulation Program. Please contact us at csc@ecu.edu if you would like an orientation to Simulab Pacerman for transvenous pacing, Simbionix Ultrasound Mentor, or Laerdal SimMan3G with trauma capabilities.

Simulation Stars
Laura Gantt, PhD, RN, CEN, NE-BC, CHSE, Associate Dean, ECU College of Nursing, was accepted as a Fellow in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) Academy. The SSH Academy recognizes individuals whose sustained contributions have had an impact on the field of healthcare simulation, who are ambassadors in healthcare simulation, and contribute to the growth of the discipline.
Becky Gilbird, MPH, CHSE, CHSOS-A was accepted by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare as an accreditation site reviewer. In this role, she will evaluate other simulation programs and promote ECU’s status as a leader in the field of healthcare simulation.

Program Activity
BSOM M1 and CRNA students participated in an interprofessional scenario with a high-fidelity manikin to learn the principles of different states of shock.
BSOM Simulation Staff taught BLS for the rising M3 class.
MICU held an interprofessional skills day with nurses and fellows to practice Blakemore tubes, PA catheters, bladder irrigation, and codes. Interprofessional faculty led each station and reinforced concepts seen in MICU patients.
BSOM, College of Nursing, and College of Social Work students participated in interprofessional scenarios in April. This is the first year that Social Work students participated, and we are excited for this opportunity for students to learn from each other!
Dr. Bill Reick from Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation held musculoskeletal ultrasound training for residents.
The BSOM Otolaryngology interest group/Interdisciplinary Oral Medicine Study Club held a skills session led by Dr. Stephanie Ledbetter. Medical and dental students learned about dental trauma, bleeding, and oral exams.
ECU Health EastCare held three days of quarterly continuing education for their staff and numerous airway courses for new hires. This course included an interprofessional collaboration with ECU Health Respiratory to orient providers to a new portable ventilator (photo left).
Family Medicine residents had a skills day where they practiced ACLS, peripheral IVs, and musculoskeletal ultrasound led by faculty from Family Medicine, College of Nursing, and Simulation Faculty.
Pulmonary and Critical Care held an escape room activity for residents where they had to successfully evaluate and manage a simulation patient in the ICU in order to complete the puzzle.
ECU Health has asked BSOM Simulation to train Advanced Practice Practitioners in central venous catheter procedures. The APPs began attending the central venous line course this spring.
ECU Emergency Medicine residents participated in the 2nd Annual Emergency Medicine Wilderness Day at Wildwood Park. There, residents rotated through stations that simulated lightning strikes, hyperthermia, and climbing accidents. Residents also practiced skills such as fish hook removal, makeshift tourniquets, and knot tying.
Expanding the Field
Divya Srinivas, M3, won first place for her research project at the 9th Annual Medical Education Day: Shark Tank session. She has been working on a research project with BSOM Simulation Faculty and Staff over the past year: Using a self-directed learning technique for learning suturing skills: Does medical student self-assessment agree with that of faculty observers? (photo left).
Becky Gilbird participated in a Director’s Panel presentation at the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare in Orlando, FL. The panel advised other simulationists on best practices, policies and procedures, and how to build a successful program (photo below).
