The month of November is always a time for us to stop and reflect on the many people and organizations who support our schools. The generosity of our community and the value placed on our schools through giving is humbling. NineStar Connect recently partnered with IBEW Local 1393 & USW Local 12213 to sponsor a new softball scoreboard and other items needed for our athletic teams. These amazing gifts help to provide opportunities for our students to develop themselves into successful young adults.
Along with the grants mentioned above, our own Mt. Vernon Education Foundation completed a Day of Giving last week collecting over $10,000 for future grants to our school personnel for programming. Even our school PTOs and boosters are jumping in to provide extra support to our schools and staff members. The multiple creative ways our parents show appreciation truly make a difference to our staff and students!
This November also saw a school board election. Congratulations to both Kellie Freeman and Shannon Walls on their reelection to the Mt. Vernon Board of Trustees. Their experience, coupled with their passion and dedication to Mt. Vernon Schools, is an example of giving the most valuable resource of time.
Fortville Elementary School & Transportation Building Groundbreaking Ceremony
The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Fortville Elementary School (FES) and the Transportation Building was opened by Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker and held on November 30. Mt. Vernon Board of Trustees President, Kellie Freeman, shared how the community support led to this Future Growth Plan initiative. Representatives from the construction firm and architecture firm talked about the process and collaboration with not only Mt. Vernon staff but also with the Town of Fortville. The planner at the Town of Fortville shared what an important project this build is to the town, and FES Principal Dr. Vince Edwards discussed how the new elementary will enhance the educational experience for students.
After the ceremony, the traditional “turning dirt” picture was taken with key representatives from the parties that have worked intently on the project. It was followed by a second picture with additional representatives involved with the project, as well as the FES fifth grade student council showcasing their handmade banner. To see pictures and details about the ceremony, please see the website article HERE.
Superintendent Dr. Parker recently shared a video with the staff and parents/guardians sharing the timeline of building FES, the Transportation Building and the new road on the Fortville campus that will help with traffic congestion. Please take six minutes to watch the video below for an enrollment update and the timing of the construction. Be sure to check out the video HERE to watch the Groundbreaking Ceremony.
MVHS Band of Marauders Perform in the ABC Thanksgiving Parade
The Mt. Vernon High School Band of Marauders enjoyed an experience of a lifetime as they performed in the ABC Thanksgiving Parade in Philadelphia. Although they did not get airtime on ABC, their performance was nothing short of amazing.
Besides performing in the Thanksgiving Parade, band members made the most of the trip by enjoying a history tour in Philadelphia and a tour of Kimmel Center. The band then traveled to New York City where they visited the Grand Central Terminal, the 9/11 Memorial Museum, Times Square, Top of the Rock (observatory on top of Rockefeller Center) and Central Park. The excursion was topped off with Thanksgiving Dinner on a riverboat beside the Statue of Liberty, followed by seeing the musical “Wicked.”
The Band of Marauders represented Mt. Vernon extremely well with not only their performance but throughout this incredible experience!
Fronek & Hubbell Named Lilly Scholarship Finalists for MVHS
Mt. Vernon High School seniors Lillianna Fronek and Ella Hubbell were selected as finalists for the Hancock County Community Foundation (HCCF) annual Lilly Endowment scholarship, where each year, two seniors are selected from each of the four Hancock County high schools. Out of these eight seniors, two lucky students were chosen to receive the scholarship that pays for all four years of their college tuition.
To become qualifiers for this highly esteemed scholarship, Fronek and Hubbell proved their academic excellence by being in the top 15% of their graduating class while also displaying their extensive involvement in the community. These two students exemplify the qualities that the award was founded on.
Mark Anderson, Hancock County Community Foundation Lilly Grant Committee member, shared, “This year was by far the most difficult I have experienced in the seven years I have been involved with the committee. The future is looking bright!”
The winner of the Lilly Endowment Scholarship will be chosen in December and Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation wishes the best of luck to Lillianna Fronek and Ella Hubbell!

MV Schools Celebrate Veterans Day
Mt. Vernon appreciates those who have served our amazing country! We are "Home of the Free Because of the Brave!" The three Mt. Vernon elementary schools and the middle school held convocations that emphasized the sacrifices made by the veterans. The convocations included student-led patriotic songs, speeches, poems, decorations and parades. Veterans in attendance greatly appreciated the well-deserved recognition.
Several schools asked the veterans in attendance to share with the audience their names, years of service, and which student(s) they accompanied. Students also not only honored the veterans in attendance, but also the members of the armed forces who were prisoners of war or who are currently unaccounted for. The elementary students also lined the halls to cheer for the veterans who passed by with their child or grandchild. During the parade, students could be heard chanting “U.S.A.” throughout the building and waving flags.
Thank you veterans for your service to our country!
