Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

Astronomically, if not academically speaking, this week saw the official start of the Autumn season. This season perhaps more than any other in the UK sees the greatest change in the natural and people-made world that's around us. The changing in the colour of the leaves, the crackling of them underfoot, the return of warm jumpers, the crackle of fireworks, the smells of warm pies and stews. I find Autumn a magical time of year that truly enlivens all the senses.

Change also was reflected in the Votes for Schools topic I had the pleasure of seeing our pupils discuss this week; 'how comfortable do you feel with change?'. Change can be a scary thing. It can take us out of our comfort zone. It can leave us longing for what we had before, or lead to further changes we cannot yet foresee.

What I reflect on, as the trees of Oakfield beautifully illustrate, is change is completely natural and no two seasons ever could, or should, look exactly the same. Have wonderful weekends all!

Eco Warriors

On Thursday morning during assembly, this year's new Eco Warriors did a tour of the Prep side building looking focusing on energy waste. We went to all classrooms and found lots of ways to save energy we will be helping to put into practice for the rest of the term!

SPORT

Lots of action to catch up on from the Sports Dept - see below!

Football and Netball Matches from last Friday

ALL year 6 children enjoyed playing their first football and netball matches for the term.

Players of the match on the football pitches were Charlie in the A team for some memorable saves in goal and Eddie and Henry on the other pitch for their attacking movements.

Well done to our Year 6 and 2 Year 5 girls who played against Rosemead today in netball! We are super proud of them.

It was great to see many parents coming to watch too.

Football and Netball Matches from yesterday

I am so proud of our Year 5 girls for their amazing collaboration and gameplay yesterday in their Netball matches against Rosemead. Well done to our A Team for winning their match by 2 goals, and also a big well done to our B Team who lost but kept the game close. A special mention to Hester and Aarya for playing so well. We look forward to our next match! Miss Emily

All Year 5 children enjoyed football matches with Rosemead and featured a brilliant pair of results. Our A Team won 4-3 and B team won 6-3. Well done all!

YEAR 6

In 6CF, we have created an English display called 'Bookflix' (instead of Netflix).

The display shows what each child is currently reading, making it easy to swap books when we've finished and offer recommendations to their friends.

YEAR 4

Year 4 have been getting their hands and drumming into rhythm with their exploration of West African djembe drumming. This rhythm, called the 'Fanga', is from Liberia and is used to welcome guests. We start with a call and response before getting into the rhythm properly. Well done Year 4

YEAR 3

This week Y3 began reading a new text to support our writing, 'Escape From Pompeii' by Christina Balit. Our topic this term is Romans, so the text will also help develop our understanding of one of the key events in Roman history!

YEAR 2

The Year 2 children were busy this week! We started learning about Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in our English lessons. Believe it or not, The White Rabbit disappeared and is nowhere to be found! Luckily, the children were able to write some fantastic posters – please help us find him!

In our Mathematics lessons we broadened our knowledge of number and place value by working practically with concrete manipulative resources.

In Science we delved deep into our topic of everyday materials and their uses. The children loved learning about natural and people-made materials and especially enjoyed sorting real materials into the two groups. What a super week Year 2!

YEAR 1

In Maths, the children have been consolidating their knowledge of place value of numbers to 10. They represented numbers using a variety of resources and practised recognising the number words. The children have been learning to explain their reasons carefully.

UPPER FOUNDATION

Upper Foundation enjoyed participating in Dough Disco for the first time this week. The children followed the instructions and copied the action. They rolled, squeezed, pinched, splatted and poked the dough. Such fun for all whilst increasing our fine motor strength and dexterity too!

LOWER FOUNDATION

Some great arts and crafts in Lower Foundation this week to explore their burgeoning creativity!

NURSERY

At Nursery there is so much exploring going on both inside and outside which has been wonderful to see during their first days at Oakfield!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

Full Wraparound Care

We have a fantastic wraparound care offering for Oakfield families so do take advantage of it.

Early Birds Club is available from 7.40am in the Prep Hall. There is no need to book - you can just turn up at the Prep Hall door! There is a fantastic breakfast on offer as well as educational games and toys for the children to get involved in.

Then we have a wide variety of co-curricular clubs and after school-care club available until 6pm including flexible pick-up time for parents. You can book these in advance via our online Parents Portal.

COMPOSER OF THE WEEK

Dear Musical Dreamers,

This week we float lazily into the ethereal realm that is the musical work of Maurice Ravel. The French composer is perhaps most recognised for his majestic 'Bolero', but other notable works include the blissful 'Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte', the dreamlike Miroirs - especially No. 2, 'Oiseaux tristes', and No. 3 'Une barque sur l'ocean' and many others. With the weather turning from summer to autumn in a very pronounced way, it's the perfect time to find a Ravel playlist and drift off into a world of musical fantasy.

Drift on,

Mr Howes
