Investing in the Workforce

Helping Current and Future CCBHCs Thrive

Our investment in the success of Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) got a boost thanks to a five-year grant from SAMHSA to operate a technical assistance center for CCBHC grantees. Since launching this year, our CCBHC-E National Training and Technical Assistance Center has trained almost 1,000 individuals from current CCBHC grantees, with plans to reach at least 5,000 in its first year. Meanwhile, our CCBHC Success Center continues to help organizations and states get more out of the model to build a foundation for the future, providing training, education and support to 4,000+ people. We also strengthened our partnership with Netsmart to enhance care coordination and population health management for CCBHCs, health homes and other organizations delivering value-based care.

Delivering Training and Technical Assistance

We pivoted our consulting services to virtual this year. Altogether, we led 32 Case to Care trainings with 16 organizations, trained 1,700+ people on motivational interviewing, and hosted 473 people and six state associations for our Middle Management Academy. We will continue to invest in our consulting to ensure our members, communities and treatment providers have what they need to thrive.

Addressing the Workforce Crisis

Recruitment and retention of employees, historically low salaries and administrative barriers continue to impact providers’ ability to meet the growing demand for mental health and substance use services. To help, we launched a series of policy briefs that shed light on emergency response recommendations for addressing the workforce and hosted a series of “office hours” with state policymakers and providers to facilitate the exchange of lessons learned and best practices.

Eliminating Health Disparities

Committed to advancing health equity among people with or at risk of mental health and substance use challenges, we launched a Social Justice Leadership Academy (SJLA) workbook that helps participants lead and sustain efforts to eliminate health disparities and advance health equity. The SJLA educates and trains the health care workforce on leadership acumen, systemic racism and change management, among other core competencies necessary for change.

Advancing Integrated Care

Through our Center of Excellence for Integrated Health Solutions (CoE-IHS), we reached 40,000+ providers via webinars, “office hours” and other learning collaboratives. We also launched four ECHO collaboratives on team-based care, health equity, alcohol and smoking, as well as a toolkit and two learning modules to help mental health and substance use treatment providers respond to health inequity and identify and address social determinants.

Offering Trauma-informed Care Training

We launched our 10th National Trauma-informed, Resilience-oriented Approach Learning Community and second Trauma-informed, Resilience-oriented, Equity-focused (TIROE) National Community of Practice. Together with the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction, we delivered customized technical assistance for 13+ counties in Indiana, created an online hub to support their implementation and sustainability efforts, and published a Trauma-informed Care Screening and Assessment Toolkit.

Partnering with Public Health Officials

In partnership with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, we helped 6,000+ public health professionals nurture resilience and mental wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic through a six-part “Public Health Leadership Check Up” webinar series. What’s more, through our Behavioral Health Training Institute, we helped 60 health officials and 30 state legislatures and staff build their capacity to enhance TIROE-focused practices within their jurisdiction.
